but the Jews didn't even have a concept of hell till Jesus, so I think our understanding of hell ballooned from what Jesus & the first Christians taught.
I admit I didn't look into this particular subject that terribly extensively (and it was also about eight years ago when I did
), but I gleaned from what research I did do that the whole immortal-souls-in-physical/mental-torment version of hell did not even really gain ground in the Church until St. Augustine championed it around 300 AD, if it was even a concept that existed in the church at all by that time. But I may have some facts misremembered. Of course, history is written a number of ways, so how totally sure can we be that one version is correct and the other is distorted, right? I guess only the Lord would know.
