I mean, Republicans elected a president who is backwards and hateful (among other things), so.... ;)

Hypocrisy is the name of the game in politics. Democrats will always hate what any Republican president does and vice versa. In my opinion, it demonstrates how most people are unable to think for themselves. Just because you're Republican you have to agree with everything Republicans do, and just because you're a Democrat you have to agree with everything the Democrats do. As for me, I will think for myself, thank you very much.

That's what's frustrating looking in from the outside; it's almost a gangland mentality when it comes to both support and voting. Most people seem to either be Blue or Red and nothing and no one will change their mind or vote from that variable.

It's pretty sad, honestly.

Americans have bought into the skewed narrative that differences in politics are a valid reason for discord and distrust. It is a gangland mentality and too many Americans put party affiliation and politics ahead of the country, it's more about "winning" than actually helping make the country a better. This hyper-partisanship in this country is what is ruining it, it's become "Democrats versus Republicans" instead of "Democrats and Republicans". Nobody wants to work together and compromise on anything, and you can't effectively run a government without compromise.

That's been the biggest issue for most of us in the diet thread haha. It's so difficult to get rid of. I don't even know if it's the sugar anymore. It's the carbonation and everything else.

That just tastes like watered down soda and nasty. I haven't found a flavor I like. I do Crystal Lite, but that always seems to intensify my hunger.

It's ridiculous. Spouses are breaking up and friendships are ending over stupid politics. Lets you know how self-involved people really are over their own thoughts and beliefs. It's petty and doesn't matter in the end.

Question for everyone: How do you personally say my username, Texas Matt, T-X Matt, or Tex Matt?
I just call you Shirley. But never to your face.

Abraham Lincoln in this election's ERB (and 2012) summed my thoughts perfectly.

I just call you Shirley. But never to your face.

"A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within." ~Ariel Durant

A co-worker once told me about an article he read in around 2000 that said the US would likely break up by 2050 because of all the political, racial, and social divides. With a country as massive and diverse as the United States, there's no question that there will be tensions that will continue to bubble up over time.

I personally believe we are seeing the rapid decline of the United States of America.

I tried to watch V for Vendetta a while back and had to stop after the first 5 minutes because of how real it was. While it's true the United States looks divided now, the truth is that we've been much more divided in our past. One of the main differences between the United States now and the United States before the Civil War is that nowadays Americans identify as Americans, but back then you were more likely to identify with your state than country, in other words you were a South Carolinian before you were an American. In the 1850s, there were actual fistfights that broke out in Congress on in the chamber floor, and while tensions to get high in Washington today, there haven't been any fistfights.

I get that people have strong opinions. As do I. I can be stubborn and hard-headed, but at least I'm open to learning and admitting that I don't know everything. It's frustrating to see people act like you don't have your own thoughts because you tow a party line. I have my own ideals, thoughts, and feelings on things that led me to make the decisions I did. No one thought for me. there was no one laying out my clothes for. Sometimes i mismatch. Other times I'm willing to forgive and give people a chance.

But it royally sucks being treated like you're a fool, being called names, losing friends, and all the hateful rhetoric on both sides towards each other over politics. I'd rather Pence was the president right now, but then someone else will come along and say he's against gays, so I much be a homophobic *rolls eyes*. You can't win with anyone, so I just hold my ground and believe what I believe. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong.

Back then, the senators and congressmen were probably genuinely passionate about the issues, whereas today they're passionate about giving themselves more power and more cushy retirements. And today they'd be terrified of potentially ruining their career in politics and having to find a real job.
