I tried to watch V for Vendetta a while back and had to stop after the first 5 minutes because of how real it was. While it's true the United States looks divided now, the truth is that we've been much more divided in our past. One of the main differences between the United States now and the United States before the Civil War is that nowadays Americans identify as Americans, but back then you were more likely to identify with your state than country, in other words you were a South Carolinian before you were an American. In the 1850s, there were actual fistfights that broke out in Congress on in the chamber floor, and while tensions to get high in Washington today, there haven't been any fistfights.
Yeah but instead of affiliation with your state, it's with your political party now. It's not just a state culture war anymore it's a polarizing political idea against another. Maybe the US isn't as divided as the civil war right now but I'm starting to see this in stages.
Protest turn to riots. Riots turn to civil disobedience. Civil disobedience turn to secession. Secession turns to war.
California has already been petitioning to secede from the union, one of the US's strongest states.
How California could secede from the US relatively easily
Calexit plan is back, but it’s toned down
CalExit movement lives, but is evolving | TheUnion.com
Remember: All it took to lead to the American Civil War was a handful of states to leave the union and for a bunch of other states to follow them afterwards.
