What's a truely meaningful song to you?

I love "Hallelujah," written by Leonard Cohen (but Jeff Buckley's cover is the best version of the song, IMHO)--

I heard there was a secret chord
that David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrough ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Well, maybe I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath you drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

And maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
Well it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I think that "Asleep in the Light" by Keith Green is truly one of the greatest songs EVER to be recorded. His musicianship, vocals, and lyrics are piercing and convicting.

Asleep in the Light

Do you see, do you see
All the people sinking down?
Don't you care, don't you care
Are you gonna let them drown?

How can you be so numb
Not to care if they come
You close your eyes
And pretend the job's done

"Oh bless me Lord, bless me Lord"
You know it's all I ever hear
No one aches, no one hurts
No one even sheds one tear

But He cries, He weeps, He bleeds
And He cares for your needs
And you just lay back
And keep soaking it in,
Oh, can't you see it's such a sin?

Cause He brings people to your door,
And you turn them away
As you smile and say,
"God bless you, be at peace"
And all heaven just weeps
Cause Jesus came to you door
You've left him out on the streets

Open up open up
And give yourself away
You see the need, you hear the cries
So how can you delay?

God's calling and you're the one
But like Jonah you run
He's told you to speak
But you keep holding it in,
Oh can't you see it's such a sin?

The world is sleeping in the dark
That the church just can't fight
Cause it's asleep in the light
How can you be so dead
When you've been so well fed?
Jesus rose from the grave
And you, you can't even get out of bed

Oh, Jesus rose from the dead
Come on, get out of your bed

How can you be so numb
Not to care if they come?
You close your eyes
And pretend the job's done
You close your eyes
And pretend the job's done

Don't close your eyes
Don't pretend the job's done
Come away, come away, come away with Me my love,
Come away, from this mess, come away with Me, my love.

First of all, nadroj - excellent, excellent song. And while I do appreciate Leonard Cohen I agree that Buckley's version beats the **** outta his.

But, er, I thought he "lived alone before I knew ya" Interesting concept! ;)
Though I think Jeff probably lived with Tim, not Leonard...

Good idea for a thread - misheard lyrics. "Scuse me, while I kiss this guy!"

Sorry :sorry:

I have no idea where that lyric came from; I just copied and pasted it from a lyric site that apparently got it wrong. Weird

I agree, "hallelujah" is a beautiful song. So many people have covered that song, i didnt know who orginally wrote it.

"Stand by me" by Sam Cooke is meaningful to me. ( i do not think it was his song orginally ) Its pretty self explanitory...

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me, stand by me-e, yeah

Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me
Darlin', darlin', stand by me-e, stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

Well, there are quite a few meaningful songs to me. Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer" and Green Day's "Good Riddance" being two notable ones because of memories or people I associate with them. However, one of the most meaningful to me is "All Night Long" by Peter Murphy.

When the night is closing
Eyes are running wild
Then I hear you humming
All night long

The sign I see it
Tell me am I true
All I need from you is
All I see

This city's paved with cold
Playboys buying fun
Seems there is no hunter left
Without his hunting gun

Can you feel the light
The air is wild open
Oh you see the light it's coming through
It's there in the distance
Always offered to me
Always coming over a hill

Oh your see-saw smile
Lasts me all night long
Like a siren's curl
When the night is long

Now come hold my hand
No bad vibe hearts
Hold my hand you know
This journey could be long

Yeah the seasons come in
All the nights are woven
All the nights we'll see them through
Ahh no hundred men now
Would dare cut into us
We'll go on and see it through

(Belle,
Une rose qui a joue son role
Mon miroir,
Mon clef do'r
Mon cheval
Et mon gant sont les cinq secrets de ma puissance

Je voulais livrer
Il sous suffira de mettre ce gant
A votre main droite
Il vous transportera ou vous desirez l'etre)

When the night has come in
Your eyes are running wild
Then I hear you humming
All night long

Yeah the sign I see it
Yeah the times I see it
All I need to know from you
Is all I see

Can you feel the light
The air is wild, open
Oh you see the light.
It's coming through
It's there in the distance
Always offered to me
Always coming over a hill
Yeah the seasons come in
All the nights are woven
All the nights we'll see them through
Ahh no hundred men now
Would dare cut into us
We'll go on and see it through

(Repeat x 3)

This song has special significance to me also, but since it's not very mainstream and few people have even heard of Peter Murphy, I figured I'd put the lyrics here. FYI, the music video for this song was one of MTV's Buzzworthy videos in 1988.

Peter Murphy? Bauhaus? I think plenty of people know about him. I listen to Cuts You Up at least once a month, the lyrics make me think of different things at different times:

I find you in the morning
After dreams of distant signs
You pour yourself over me
Like the sun through the blinds
You lift me up
And get me out
Keep me walking
But never shout
Hold the secret close
I hear you say

You know the way
It throws about
It takes you in
And spits you out
When you desire
To conquer it
To feel you're higher
To follow it
You must be clean
With mistakes
That you do mean
Move the heart
Switch the pace
Look for what seems out of place

Yeah on and on it goes
Calling like a distant wind
Through the zero hour we'll walk
Cut the thick and break the thin
No sound to break no moment clear
When all the doubts are crystal clear
Crashing hard into the secret wind

You know the way
It twists and turns
Changing colour
Spinning yarns
You know the way
It leaves you dry
It cuts you up
It takes you high
You know the way
It's painted gold
Is it honey
Is it gold
You know the way
It throws about
It takes you in
And spits you out
You know the way
It throws about
It takes you in
And spits you out
It spits you out
When you desire
To conquer it
To feel you're higher
To follow it
You must be clean
With mistakes
That you do mean
Move the heart
Switch the pace
Look for what
Seems out of place

And now I find
The special kind
You yourself
Like sun through blinds
You lift me up
Get me out
Keep me walking
But never shout
It's o.k.
It goes this way
The line is thin
It twists away
Cuts you up
It throws about
Keep me walking
But never shout.

Plus, he's got a great voice.

Kashmir ~ Led Zepplin

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.
oh

Oh oh
Oh

Oh, baby Iv been flying... mama, there ain't no denyin'
I've been flying, ain't no denyin', no denyin'

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I've been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high and true, when movin' through Kashmir.

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
Ohh.

When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah

Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down...
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there

Let me take you there. Let me take you there

I probably should have said not many people I've talked to have known who he was. Only two or three people so far have, including you. And it took me a while before I found out he was originally Bauhaus' lead singer. Cuts You Up was actually the first song I'd ever heard of his. One of the rock stations around my area has an old-school alternative music program that plays a lot of stuff they'd never even think of playing during daylight hours, and that's where I'd heard it (and then it popped up in the background of one of my mom's soap operas...that was a tad strange).

This is going to sound like such a cliche because it's eveyone's loss song, but I lost a friend to God and cancer a few months ago and I found one of his Offspring CD mixes in my car.

I was listening to it on the way home one day and it had the song Gone Away. I was listening to the lyrics and it really summed up everything that I was feeling over his loss. I had to pull over because I couldn't see through the tears. To this day, I can't listen to that song without crying.

"Maybe in another life
I could find you there
Pulled away before your time
I can't deal it's so unfair

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it feels
Yeah it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you've gone away"

Well let's see....Come Sail Away by Styx was really meaningful to me in college. I was really struggling with leaving my high school life and girlfriend behind, and I really discovered that song right around when I finally began to move on from that part of my life:

I'm sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free, free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try to carry on

I look to the sea, reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever, so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on
As for Christian songs...Amazing Love by Rebecca St. James...really makes me realize how wonderful God's love is and how compassionate he is that despite my flaws, he still loves me:

I'm forgiven,
because You were forsaken,
I'm accepted, You were condemned,
and I'm alive and well your spirit is within me,
because You died and rose again.

Amazing love,
how can it be,
that You my king would die for me?
Amazing love,
I know it's true,
and it's my joy to honor You.

I pretty much have a song for every event in my life, but here are a couple.

I Know You By Heart
(Eva Cassidy)
*This song holds a special place in my heart for my grandpa who died*

Midnights in Winter
The glowing fire
Lights up your face in orange and gold.
I see your sweet smile
Shine through the darkness
It’s line is etched in my memory.

So I’d know you by heart.

Mornings in April
Sharing our secrets
We’d walk until the morning was gone.
We were like children
Laughing for hours
The joy you gave me lives on and on.

‘Cause I know you by heart.

I still hear your voice
On warm Summer nights
Whispering like the wind.

(Oh oh ohh…)

You left in Autumn
The leaves were turning
I walked down roads of orange and gold.
I saw your sweet smile
I heard your laughter
You’re still here beside me every day.

‘Cause I know you by heart,
‘Cause I know you by heart.

I Shall Believe
(Sheryl Crow)
*This song is meaningful of recent issues in my life*

Come to me now
And lay your hands over me
Even if it's a lie
Say it will be alright
And I shall believe

I'm broken in two
And I know you're on to me
That I only come home
When I'm so all alone
But I do believe

That not everything is gonna be the way
You think it ought to be
It seems like every time I try to make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly you won't give up on me
And I shall believe
And I shall believe

Open the door
And show me your face tonight
I know it's true
No one heals me like you
And you hold the key

Never again
would I turn away from you
I'm so heavy tonight
But your love is alright
And I do believe

That not everything is gonna be the way
You think it ought to be
It seems like every time I try to make it right
It all comes down on me
Please say honestly
You won't give up on me
And I shall believe
I shall believe
