  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Whatever you bind on earth, you have already bound in heaven

The exact verse YOU used. It wasn't JUST for Peter. Yes, it was directed at him...but not ONLY for him. OR the keys would of 'gone' with him. Look, Listener, did you read my other posts? I am NOT good at debating and I am not going to. SO please...don't bait me ok? Thanks!
My humble apologies.

I wrote that before I read your post about not wanting to debate.

Although, this section of Christian Forums is for discussions on issues we may not all agree with.

I believe these verses mean precisely what they appear to mean, and that is why many Protestants (but certainly not all) have shyed away from them for fear that they seem too 'Catholic.'

I believe they do mean that authority is being given to the disciples, authority that has the full weight and bearing that it has eternal effects.

Disbelieving in Paul, and ignoring his Scriptural commands, is detrimental to your health -- both physically and spiritually. Paul, I believe, had the authority and power from God, promised by Christ, to bind and loose on earth. These disciples gave us the words of God, the new commandments and instructions, warnings and rebukings. These rebukes, should we fail to heed them, are binding on us even unto heaven; we cannot escape them.

Because it sounds a little too much like other denominations that some Protestants prefer not to see in the Scriptures, this verse has often been stripped of its meaning. I believe it is giving great power and authority to these disciples. I also believe that the church was indeed in a sense 'built' on Peter, and not 'Peter's confession that we can all confess, that Jesus is Christ as Lord and Savior.

I hope this helps! Just letting Scripture speak is a powerful and life-changing thing!

Jesus says it in Matthew 16:19, and then again in Matthew 18:18. The context is 2 different things.

The NIV study note says for Matthew 16:19 "bind...loose. Not authority to determine, but to announce, guilt or innocence"

I am not exactly sure what these scriptures mean to be fully honest, but it is more important to go ahead and follow what you do understand from the Scriptures, then these harder ones will come along in time.

"Whatever you bind on earth, you have already bound in heaven" What does jesus mean by this, I need a simplified version of the bible because I don't understand Jesus's teachings, well some of them.

It doesn't really say "you" will bin it in heaven. Jesus is promising He will have already bound it in heaven.

Here's the full text.
Mat 16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Mat 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

What Jesus is doing is giving His Church His full Authority which is "bound in heaven". The keys are the indication of Authority. Later in the Jesus also gave the ability to bind and loose to the rest of the twelve.

May the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you always.

Your brother in Christ.
