Psalm 19~
1 For the leader. A psalm of David: The heavens declare the glory of God, the dome of the sky speaks the work of his hands. 2 Every day it utters speech, every night it reveals knowledge. 3 Without speech, without a word, without their voices being heard, 4 their line goes out through all the earth and their words to the end of the world. In them he places a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom from the bridal chamber, with delight like an athlete to run his race. 6 It rises at one side of the sky, circles around to the other side, and nothing escapes its heat. 7 The Torah of ADONAI is perfect, restoring the inner person. The instruction of ADONAI is sure, making wise the thoughtless. 8 The precepts of ADONAI are right, rejoicing the heart. The mitzvah of ADONAI is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of ADONAI is clean, enduring forever. The rulings of ADONAI are true, they are righteous altogether, 10 more desirable than gold, than much fine gold, also sweeter than honey or drippings from the honeycomb. 11 Through them your servant is warned; in obeying them there is great reward. 12 Who can discern unintentional sins? Cleanse me from hidden faults. 13 Also keep your servant from presumptuous sins, so that they won't control me. Then I will be blameless and free of great offense. 14 May the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be acceptable in your presence, ADONAI, my Rock and Redeemer.

i've found that the law that matters is the law that God Himself wrote at mt. sinai. the ten commandments.

Exodus 24:12 ( NKJV ) 12Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and be there; and I will give you tablets of stone, and the law and commandments which I have written, that you may teach them.”

in my mind the Christ confirms:

Matthew 19:16-19 ( NKJV ) 16Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”
17So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
18He said to Him, “Which ones?”
Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ 19‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”

seems clear to me from the law, which commandments Jesus was talking about.

the last part of verse 19 tells me all i need to know. loving your neighbor sums up the las six of the ten commandments and the first four shows love toward God.

they are principles that would produce the love that God is.

What is the law? It is the covenant…it is the commandments, instructions, rulings, and regulations to maintain covenant membership.
What is the merits? Proper relationship…Live and harmony with God.
What does it mean? Messiah, restoration, and beyond words
Gems? I once told a guy I memorize books of the bible. Shortly afterwards, we attended a sermon where the leader had a great quote on life but it was not from the bible. He turned to me and said, “Now that is a thing worth memorizing.” He was not meaning anything bad about it, but thought that he could not memorize a whole book of the bible made him feel week…I say… “I carry with me the very words of God.”

Of course, if there is sections…I do like Deut. 8.

Lulav read the OP thread again. He wants to get away from a discussion on the usual 613.
Thank you, I know how to read, but his post was confusing. I wanted to clarify since the word 'law' can mean different things to different people.:)

Not th 613 rabbinical laws the actual laws? What are the merits of the Law? What are the gems found in the Law? What does it all mean? references from Tanach and the 4 Eyewitnesses please. By the way this particular thread got taken down for review in the theology section apparently because the closest description I can identify with is NTM. And that section is christian only. although I did not see the non-christian part to it. I just wanted to keep it away from an argument between Law and Grace. Old testament vs new testament. I wanted it to be about finding the gems in the law, the metaphors. To look deeper rather than just the patent answer "it is a taskmaster so that we can see how wrong we are".
Since I've been made to look illiterate (funny as my career is in writing, worked for a newspaper and now freelance :D ) Let me be more explicit in my questions to you so I can better answer it.

Firstly the 613 are not Rabbinical laws, you are confusing those which are found in the Torah with the Rabbinical added laws that are found in the Talmud.

What are the merits or what are the merits of following G-ds Holy Laws or instructions?

Gems? please define. If you want a 10 gem crown that would be those written in stone and placed in the Ark. The two diamonds are the two Greatest, Deut 6:4-9 and Lev 19:18

Who are the four witnesses you are referring to?

"it is a taskmaster so that we can see how wrong we are"
You certainly won't be getting that answer from me here, others, I can't say.

The best answer I can give you before clarification of your questions is that if you are speaking of the 10 commandments which are the basic outline of the rest of the 613 this is the Holy Covenant that YHVH made with his people. It is a marriage covenant between him and his chosen bride. If we want to be his bride this is the same covenant we must follow. My understanding of the New Covenant is not found in the pages following the words 'New Covenant' or ' New Testament' in your Bible, but I believe it is much closer to the truth of what it is. If you are interested in what that is, just ask and I will share. :)

In the end, God's grace is the giving of the Torah to mankind so that we may understand and know how to follow him. It is not a hard thing to keep. See Deuteronomy 30:11-14. The grace messages are irrelevant.

To understand what the Torah is, it is the 613 mitzvahs, and we know this because there is no oral Torah mentioned in the Tanakh.
