  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

the closer we can see it or touch it, the greater the accuracy of analysis.
that is, the greater we can interact with it.

I know the point you are making but this isn't necessarily the case.

I can measure phenomena in the distant universe in some cases to more accuracy than I can in a lab on the earth.

now,
if we measure a rock, can we make a valid assumption of the earths age?
You'll know that the earth (if it's a rock from the earth) is at least as Old as the rock.

No - what we can do is to constrain it by a lower limit. From astrophysical evidence we can constrain the other way by an upper limit.

The Earth as a whole does not have a birth certificate.

Not nessesairly what if in theory, There was another world, not that i believe this, just a theory, and this rock came from that world???

what ya think?

Is it possible?

Am i correct in calling this a theory?

That's a conjecture - which with some fleshing out would be a hypothesis.

And then you try to check that hypothesis and if you can assign a likelihood to it. Then see if it holds up in the other consequences of it.

i.e.

try to make a predcition of your hypothesis that can be tested by experiment or observation. Remember observation is a valid experimental technique.

In short:

let's use a rock, and agree on the chances (percent) it has always been here.

I don't think that is a correct summation. Though I accept that any scientist worth his salt will ascribe error bounds to his analysis.

And just for the record - there is nothing wrong with statstical inference since it is mathematically well founded.

Everyone knows the common phrase "there are lies, damned lies and statistics". This is misleading.

No correctly calculated statistic is ever wrong. What people do is use statistics incorrectly. There is a difference.

ok, well its a start.

well its been a great conversation
i must now go home, Happy new year to all

and God Bless

And the same to you as well.

Don't accept what I say. Check things out - carefully. Read both sides on these issues. But more than anything else - try to think on the issues and try to understand the basis for the arguments and also try to see the interconnections of all the concepts.

There is a reason that the standard scientific models exist and it isn't a conspiracy against belief despite the attempts of some to portray it as such.

In other words - watch out for polemical arguments.

the error would be so minute it would'nt really have much bearing antway.
simplyg123 was following a line of questioning I anticipated him to complete, or take further anyway.
I just wanted to see where it would go.
Sounds like Old earth/young earth are equally difficult prove.

Obviously I disagree.

I would say the old Earth is borne out by the evidence to the everyday sense of a fact.

The young Earth position is falsified by the data.

It is a fact that today I am 56 years old or so.
And, since time began (for us) we started out as a fetus.

If we wound the clock back to the first human being and asked him how old he is (at that time), he would tell us X number years. But we have an edge on him. He was never a fetus.

on the young earth data, I'm sure you've checked it out and you are likely right.

Well we disagree on that but the argument of Adam = man or Adam = archetype is off topic I guess.
