I found out that most (if not all) of my ancestors in Hungary were Gypsies, my father told me stories of his great uncles who were gypsies; and told me that, that it where I get all of my dark skin/eyes/looks from. I was also told that it was from those roots that started me on dancing and music..*grin* guess its in the blood! ;)
Obviously this makes finding birth/death records very difficult as well as geneology in general. :( But, at least it's something. *shrug*

I'm Irish, German, and French. Possibly Native American. My ancestors came over in the 1600's, yep, before we became a nation. As for the one who's family may have been Nazi's, you can't be ashamed of that. It wasn't YOU. My family, apparently, owned slaves at some point. Whereas I'm not PROUD of that, I certainly feel no shame. I simply feel sad at their ignorance. I do know that some relatives fought in the Civil War for the North, some fought in the American Rev. for both the colonies AND the Brits (my ancestors were the German "hit men" or the Hessians). We shouldn't be ashamed of something we have no control over.

Blessings.
Your so right.

I just stopped by here out of curiosity, and love reading about everyone's genealogical background. I'm what we used to call a "Heinz 57" when I was younger (Heinz Ketchup advertised "57 Varieties of foods

First my maternal side: Romanian, Russian and Austrian Jewish
My maternal grandfather's family emigrated around the turn of the 20th century from Focsani, Romania (probably some Gypsy.to New York City. My grandfather, was born on board ship just inside the 12 mile limit, and so considered born in NY.

My maternal great-grandmother's parents emigrated from Russia to Austria to the US in the early 1880's (we think). Don't know anything else about them.

Now, my paternal side is another whole story: Swiss, German, Dutch, American Indian (not sure of the tribe), English, Irish, Welsh and Scot.
An extensive genealogy was done on my father's paternal side in 1970, and updated in the 1990's.

My father's paternal line is traced back to Bus, Switzerland, in the Basel Canton, through church records going back to at least the 1530's. Because of its location, the town changed hands between Switzerland, Germany and Holland over the years.
In the 1730's, the family recieved a grant with the help of Princess Charlotte of Mecklinburg to travel to the U.S. They emigrated in 1736, settling in Newberry Township, South Carolina. The family had split loyalties during The Revolutionary War, and half left to fight with the British. Eventually, those who fought on the Patriot side spread thoughout the South, with my ancestors ending up in Louisiana and finally Texas, where my Dad was born.

My paternal grandmother's family brought with it a good part of British Isles in the mid-1700s, settling in New Jeersey, then to the Southern states, and my relatives ending up in Texas as well.

So you see, I am a real hodge-podge as well!

I have way too many: Norman(French), Anglo-Saxon(English), Irish, Polish, German, Jewish, Native American Cherokee, Turkish, and Russian. Most of my heritage is of medieval Norman descent. My ancestors date from the 9th century(Dark Ages?). They were Vikings(Norman="Northmen") who settled in Normandy and when Duke William of Normandy(whom I am distantly related to) decided to "invade" England, my Norman ancestors went with him. I find it very odd, because I have Anglo-Saxon ancestors AND Norman ancestors who both fought in the Battle of Hastings. Anglo-Saxons and Normans interbred, having a surname that sounded both Norman French and Anglo-Saxon. My family settled in Somerset around the 12-13 century. On my mom's side, I'm mostly Russian. From personal research, I do know that my Russian ancestors date from around the 15-16th centuries. I'm also related to the Romanov family("Czars").

LOL! Sorry for that long historical lesson. I love telling people the story behind my family.
