  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does it mean for God to "exist"?

God exists outside of the Universe

How do you know that? You have made a statement of fact so must have evidence for this. Given we have no idea what is outside of the universe, if indeed there is anything, how can you possibly make that statement?

God exists outside of the Universe

I'll let you wrap your head around that, then get back to me :)

As people normally use the word, I agree with you. The God type of Love is not a man-made idea, nor is it merely an idea but is a force

Please define the word "exist." If you opt to use my definition, either draw me a picture of god or accept that he/she/it is a concept made by man!

LOL! Forces are concepts too. Can you draw me gravity?

Really?

Does the number π (pi) exist? Are mathematicians correct when they say that, for every map, a four-colour colouring method exists? Does the play Romeo and Juliet exist? Does the wind exist? Does gravity exist? Does an electron exist? Does the Universe exist?

Who, exactly, uses your definition of "exist"? A Google search finds that it only occurs in your post here on CF.

I see that you believe it, but shouting doesn't make it true.

Gravity is more than just a concept. If you don't believe me, try jumping out of the nearest window.

The number pi exists as a concept! We define what it is! Does the play Romeo and Juliet exist? As a concept, yes. As an object? No! Wind and gravity are concepts that relate one object to another. They relate particles! Does the universe exist? Again, the universe is a concept that relates objects such as planets and stars to each other! Then there is space, which is the absence of an object. So, the universe is a concept that we humans use to relate objects in space!

Look up Bill Gaede! We both use the same definition of "exist." I don't care if it is popular or pleases the masses! A definition should be unambiguous and rational. If it is not, then it fails! I have yet to see any rational unambiguous definition of the word "exist" that a theist can use to rationalize that god "exists."

I can shout whenever I feel like it. I don't care if you like it or not!

Gravity is more than just a concept? So, what is it bro?

Please define the word "exist."
It's already been defined:

  1. to have actual being; be
  2. to have life or animation; live
  3. to continue to be or live
  4. to have being in a specified place or under certain conditions
  5. to achieve the basic needs of existence, as food and shelter

Do cars exist, under your definition? Do they need food and shelter?

It only exists in his mind. He can't draw it, so it must not be real. ;)

Gravity is more than just a concept. If you don't believe me, try jumping out of the nearest window.

In the Universe he's describing, roping the moon and lassoing it in would be an entirely different thing, since some of us wrestle with concepts quite well.

How do you know that? You have made a statement of fact so must have evidence for this.

You are entitled to so limit yourself in this fashion, but you have no right to extend that to others. God exists outside of the Universe. No I don't expect you to know what that means, but it does pertain directly to the OP's question(s)

Things can exist without being an object. In fact, we have a word for the error you're perpetuating here. It's called "objectification." Often, this is seen as a bad thing ;)

Wind and gravity are concepts that relate one object to another. They relate particles! Does the universe exist? Again, the universe is a concept that relates objects such as planets and stars to each other! Then there is space, which is the absence of an object.

Those statements are filled with errors.

Yes.

No ... cars exist under Definition #1, not Definition #2.

Your definitions are vague. "To have actual being."

What does that mean? To have shape and location?

You cannot use several different definitions and apply some of them for humans and others for cars. Your definitions have to be unambiguous. Here is mine:

Both humans and cars exist because they have shape and location.

Existence does not give a hoot about anthropomorphic needs like food and shelter.

I'm sure you've used the term "exist" enough times that you know the proper definitions; and when to apply them.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Of course! I know what things "exist" in reality, such as cars and humans, and concepts that "exist" in the minds of people, such as love and justice!
