Faith is a gift.
-CryptoLutheran
Show me a verse
I know the gift of God is Eternal Life, and the gift is free.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I already did, Ephesians 2:8 and Romans 10:17.
It is God who gives us faith as a gift, it is not of ourselves; and this faith comes by the word of Christ. Wherever the Word is preached and the Sacraments administered it is God who is at work converting the hearts of sinners to faith.
Because salvation is by grace alone, through faith. Our own works do not contribute to our justification before God, indeed they can't, because our works are sinful.
-CryptoLutheran
If you are trying to say that Ephesians is saying that you are mistaken, salvation is the gift in Ephesians and is received by faith.
Except "salvation" isn't a noun in the passage, and thus does not correspond to "this". Rather, "this" probably refers to the entire clause, "For by grace you have been saved through faith", all of that is God's gift and work, not of ourselves.
If faith is an act of human will, an act of human effort, then not only is the phrase "this is not of yourselves" false, but verse 9 which says, "not of your efforts" is likewise false.
So which is it?
-CryptoLutheran
If want to get into the language of the verse, as you believe that
(Excerpt below from: The Grace New Testament commentary)
that refers to faith since it is the nearest antecedent, with the idea that faith is a gift from God. However, the Greek word that is neuter and the greek word faith is feminine. Demonstrative pronouns normally match their antecedents in number and gender. It is better to see the pronoun that referring to the entire clause, stating that by grace a person is saved through faith. Salvation (Eternal Life) is not of oneself; it is the gift of God, lest anyone should boast.
John 4:10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
No you did not read the last partThat's literally what I just said. Since the entire clause corresponds to "this", that makes faith God's gift.
-CryptoLutheran
No you did not read the last part
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,
The, not of yourselves, is directed toward salvation and not faith. Salvation is not of yourself, it is a gift from God. (you can not save yourself)
Romans 6:23 testifies to this, as does the verse i posted John 4:10
it does not, it is stating that the salvation is the gift of GodSo why did you quote a commentary that affirmed my position if you don't even agree with what you quoted to me?
-CryptoLutheran
it does not, it is stating that the salvation is the gift of God
This is from the commentary.
It is better to see the pronoun that referring to the entire clause, stating that by grace a person is saved through faith. Salvation (Eternal Life) is not of oneself; it is the gift of God, lest anyone should boast.
So why did you quote a commentary that affirmed my position if you don't even agree with what you quoted to me?

Just like Romans 10:17 when a person hears that Eternal Life is by trusting in The Messiah for the free gift. They know the object to place their faith in, to receive eternal life.
Then why do they not matchThat would mean that "salvation" grammatically applies to "this". It does not, because the word "salvation" isn't found in the text. The word is "saved", it's a verb. The clause is "For by grace you have been saved through faith". Faith is part of that clause. The whole clause, every bit of that, the whole "saved by grace through faith"--that's God's work, not something you do. That's the gift.
-CryptoLutheran
Then why, when many people hear, they do not believe. If a person receives faith from hearing. Thousands of people are hearing (sermons etc..)each day.Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
πίστις ἐξ ἀκοῆς
Faith comes by hearing.
-CryptoLutheran
I guess if a person is deaf, they are just doomed to the lake of fire.Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
πίστις ἐξ ἀκοῆς
Faith comes by hearing.

What else does what say?
The verse?
The verse teaches that you are born on earth, and your mother's water breaks, and this is "born of water", on earth, pregnancy......natural birth.
Then Jesus says that you must have a 2nd birth.....a Spiritual Birth. BORN AGAIN.
"you must be BORN AGAIN">
...
See, you can't just blindly quote verses, 1213. You have to use scriptures to give context to other scriptures.
Salvation is a GIFT. "not of WORKS Lest any person will boast"
2 Thessalonians 1:8-9...and what else?
