And yet it doesn't happen with nearly the frequency in any other developed country on earth.

IF we are to resign ourselves to this as "just normal" then I'm begging our government officials to STOP blathering on about "prayers and condolences" to the victims: IF WE DON'T ACTUALLY CARE ABOUT THEM ENOUGH TO DO SOMETHING THEN DON'T MOUTH THE WORDS!
You are correct on it happening here much more often. As for doing something about it, there are many who feel there is no option, and that people are just going to kill each other and nothing can be done to stop it that won't have dire consequences for the country.

Essentially, they do mourn the dead, but they believe they can't do anything about guns without restrictioning essential freedom and/or exposing the nation to undue danger.

I see this sort of claim a lot. I never see it explained, though...
That's because it is a garbage argument that wants to avoid the fact that Americans aren't some kind of exceptional supermen of freedom, but just regular human folk like the rest of the world.

Why are firearms the only issue you accept these sorts of stats as "the price of doing business"? Again, consider Kinder Surprises? Buckyballs? Lawn Darts?
Primarily I think it has to do with the second amendment. You have the right to bear arms, but not toys encased in chocolate.

I wasn't arguing that there wasn't a rationale to the Second Amendment. When it was drafted.
Yet, as was pointed out human nature has not change. The weapons have, but so have the tools used to express the first amendment and I do not see as many people up in arms about that.

How many deaths have been caused in the changes that advanced tools have brought to the First Amendment?

And yet it's "I need a gun for self defence against criminals!" That seems to be the fundamental argument that keeps coming up
Perhaps. Yet is was a bunch of grubby Red Coats who made a beeline after landing in Boston to the armories of the militia. That's the history behind gun grabbing Americans remember most.

The 2nd Amendment looked to prevent the tyranny of the one, few and masses. That is the real resistance behind government controlled 'gun ownership.' Now did the founders foresee citizens with an arsenal larger than a militia armory? Probably not and that can be cause for concern to good order and discipline within the citizenry. Or a nut job on drugs slugging down pints of whiskey having an arsenal. I think some of the founders would see that as immoral living and such a person as a danger to good society. They did say our Constitution was for a moral people.

I think the overarching problem is we as a Western society have failed in general to police ourselves and others and expect government to all things for us.

If our psyche is "so different" than why does the rest of the world like our movies?

Science is science and human beings are human beings.

UK and Australia are very close to America in terms of being "Western" and Progressive. So don't try to make it out like I'm trying to compare the US to Saudi Arabia...

UK and Australia are so close to America that their comedians and musicians can come over here and make a killing...

Just saying. Science is Science and data is data and human beings are human beings. So this notion that we can just disregard the UK and Australia because they are "different" is not very wise.

Yeah, that's all probably true. But what I'm getting at is that the American psyche, on the whole, is quite different. While Australia and the UK have been actively trying to improve education, and make it more accessible to it's workforce, we've been driving up costs, trying to discredit educational institutions, and generally trying to make education a commodity. While Australia and the UK and Europe in general have been trying to advance their workforce to be at the forefront of advanced technologies and innovation in industry. Rather than push for that our focus has been trying to bring back manufacturing and coal jobs. While the rest of the world has said that climate change is a major problem and we should work together to solve it, America has said...nah.

There is a difference in the basic psychology/sociology of America which is why we need guns.

I did not say more deaths had or had not been caused, but that if you are going to say that the second amendment only applied back then then so should the first amendment the 4th, 5th ECT.

You do know, right, that the government does not care ?

I also know that many Americans don't care. The only thing we all really care about is the sanctity of the almighty gun from whom all bullets flow.

That culture plays a role instead of banning certain guns changing the CULTURE would do much.

Right to freedom (bond money).
But you only need bond money if you have loss your freedom because of something you supposedly did.
