At the very beginning it says that the definition varies by jurisdiction. Yes, it goes on to give a general idea, but still no definition that has been accepted EVERYWHERE.
All the definitions are pretty similar. None of them say "anything can be an assault weapon"

Actually, I have seen some sheriffs say that they would NOT enforce certain gun regulations.

I'm sure there are. If sheriffs do not enforce laws agains machine guns, they should fired. If people are injured because of their negligence, they can be sued.

Currently, they've been pretty much illegal since 1934. To get one would cost a person tens of thousands of dollars, and they would be very old because they're not even allowed to be manufactured anymore, except for the military. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.
The reason for the question is that some folks posting here think that guns should not ever be banned.

I did not say that a definition would actually say that, but no item on itself can be dangerous without some force acting upon it and anything can be dangerous if abused or placed in the wrong hands.

No. But try killing someone with a spoon sometime.

There goes our forks and knives! Pretty soon, we'll only be allowed to have eating utensils that maximum security prisoners are allowed.

How exactly do you define assault weapons ANYTHING can be used as an assault weapon and I do mean ANYTHING.

IMHO, you're being silly. All you had to do was to look up the last federal law on the subject. This law was upheld several times in the Supreme Court. To directly answer your question, legislators have to define "assault weapons" in order to regulate them, just as they had to define machine guns or automatic weapons.

I wish there was a continent where people were as happy and prosperous as we are in the USA but didn't have mass shootings every other day. I can imagine that imaginary continent. In my imagination it has countries in it like "Britain", "Norway", "Sweden", --sorry, I just made those silly names up! --

Check the tax rates on those countries. Government does so much for the people there that the people can no longer afford to do much for themselves. Safety and security isn't everything.

Depends on where they live. I know around here the sheriff is elected not otherwise hired, so rather or not they would be fired would depend on how the voters in that particular jurisdition felt about the issue.

LET"S BE CLEAR

Congress can ban certain guns. Congress had banned certain guns. Certain guns are illegal now. The Supreme Court has upheld federal laws banning certain guns, and has also upheld las regulating guns.

All this nonsense about knives is just that, nonsense. Folks here can argue that ALL gun ownership should be protected. That is NOT the law in the US.

bingo but there needs to be a definition that is the same everywhere ( which is at the moment not the case.

The news media are redefining things all the time. They always refer to AR15 rifles and "assault weapons". After the LV shooting, David Muir on ABC News referred to them as "artillery". I'm sure the military would disagree with that definition, but then again, the news media isn't interesting in reporting facts, but rather sensationalism.

Well, the point is that the more you regulate the easier it will be to allow them to regulate more.

Perhaps not. But people are trying to say that since some guns are illegal, then it's ok to push the boundaries of what should be illegal--and it doesn't take long to see that the gun ban crowd is happy to push it all the way to a ban on every gun in America. Even our legislators have admitted this:

there's lots of kangaroos there, too.

Oh yeah and there's that other magical made-up continent where the "Kangaroos" live!

The world is full of imaginary places! But we need to stop thinking about unicorns and Europeans and Australians and remember the only countries with strict gun control laws are invariably repressive dictatorships.

LOLOL! Yeah taxes may be high in European western social democracies but as someone who has worked with many of them in Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, UK and Germany I saw that they still have a pretty good standard of living. They're hardly horrible places to live.

If someone thinks a country other than the USA is safer and better in all the ways they value, then nothing stops them from moving there. In the meantime, people who value freedom along with the risks involved will stay right here in America.
Freedom comes with a price.

Well, nothing apart from being able to afford it, to find a country that will take you, and getting a job as an immigrant. It's a bit more than "nothing"

In the meantime, people who value freedom along with the risks involved will stay right here in America.
Freedom comes with a price.

When toddlers kill 20 people a year, the price is too high.

And the irony is you are not even free, you have the highest incarceration rates of any developed country, and are ruled by plutocrats. The only real freedom Americans have is the freedom to live in constant fear.
