The Sabbath for Jesus and his followers was Saturday. The 7th day of the week has always been the Jewish Sabbath. The early Christians began celebrating Sunday as the day of Jesus' resurrection. Many of them also observed Saturday as the Jewish Sabbath. Gradually, over many decades its seems, Sunday replaced Saturday as the Sabbath day for Christians. The Orthodox/Catholic Church eventually formalized Sunday as the Sabbath day for Christians. The Seventh-Day Adventist Protestant community disagrees and they still recognize Saturday as the Sabbath.

So, you ask what day is the Sabbath? Muslims have Friday, Jews have Saturday and the vast majority of Christians have Sunday.

Jesus rose on Sunday, the weekly sabbath is Saturday. However, Sabbaths and new moon festivals are a portion of the old covenant that mark Israel out as a holy nation. In the new covenant, Sunday has supplanted Saturday as the day of corporate worship and setting aside a "sabbath" rest day is up to each individual believer. Let no one despise you regarding a sabbath.

With no basis in the word of GOD they did this.

He rose on the 1st day of the week (Sunday). The Sabbath is on the 7th day (Saturday) beginning at sunset on Friday evening and ending when 3 stars appear Saturday evening...

No, in Orthodoxy the Sabbath is still the 7th day...it has never been changed or been replaced.

That week there was a Sabbath on Thursday. It was the Passover Sabbath. On Saturday was the weekly Sabbath. Sunday morning around 6am Jesus was not in the tomb and met Mary in the garden.

No it wasn't. The 14th of Nisan was a Friday that year (Passover) and the 15th (the 1st day of unleavened bread) was on the weekly Sabbath that year.

The Book of Exodus would appear to confirm your statement. However, the Orthodox/Catholic Church probably based the change upon Holy Tradition, which they felt was passed on down from one generation to another.

The feast of unleavened bread is never called a Sabbath in the Bible.
Exodus 12:15-16
15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread; howbeit the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses; for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel.
16 And in the first day there shall be to you a holy convocation, and in the seventh day a holy convocation; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be done by you.
No work may be done on the Sabbath, the preparation and cooking of food is specifically permitted on the 1st and last day of Unleavened bread.
All four gospels agree that Jesus was crucified on "parasceue" which means "preparation." In the time of Jesus and today the Greek word "parasceue" was and is the name of the day we call Friday.
There was one day of preparation in passion week "Friday" the day before the Sabbath. Jesus was found to be risen early "Sunday" morning.

I have heard this statement previously here on CF, but do not know what it means. Does the EOC teach that work should be avoided on Saturday, unless necessary? The last I knew that Catholic Church teaches that unnecessary work is to be avoided on Sunday, in keeping with the Ten Commandments and the prohibition against working on the Sabbath. Needless to say, I do not think that this prohibition is emphasized very much in this day and age, let alone one that many Catholics/Protestants abide by.

I'm in an argument with my dad about these two questions and would like to know what you guys say. :)

The Scriptures repeatedly tell us he was raised on the third day.

For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NRSV)

Luke 24 begins on Sunday:

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. Luke 24:1 (NRSV)

That day was the third day.

But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Luke 24:21 (NRSV)

So Jesus was raised on Sunday.

When Jesus died, what day of the week did he rise?

Jesus died and was buried on the day of preparation for the Sabbath (Friday before sunset). The Scriptures specifically say that it was "about the 9th hour" when Jesus breathed His last and died, the 9th hour in antiquity roughly corresponds to 3pm our time.

And Jesus rose on the first day of the week, the day after the Sabbath.

Under the Jewish reckoning of days, a day was sunset to sunset. So in Judaism the Sabbath is from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. So the "first day of the week" was from sunset Saturday to sunset Sunday. We do not know precisely what time the Lord rose, but we are told that when the women came to the tomb to adorn His body with spices, and the tomb was already empty, it says it was before sunrise.

So Jesus died on the sixth day of the week (Friday)
Jesus' body was in the tomb all day on the Sabbath (Saturday)
And He rose from the dead on the first day of the week (Sunday).

Also, what day is the sabbath? Is it Saturday

The Sabbath is Saturday. Or more accurately it is from sunset Friday evening until sunset Saturday evening. However the Sabbath isn't relevant for Christians, the command to rest on the Sabbath was given exclusively to the Jewish people as part of the Covenant God established with them at Mt. Horeb at Sinai. It's the same reason why there is no command for us to circumcise our male children, or follow any dietary restrictions, or to offer sacrifices, or laws concerning ritual purity.

You can rest on any day you want to rest.
You can eat whatever you want to eat.
You can wear whatever you want to wear.

The reason why Christians worship on the first day of the week is because it's the day Christians have always gathered. Or, more specifically, Christians have worshiped on every day of the week since the beginning. But the weekly gathering of worship on the first day of the week, which Christianity calls the Lord's Day because it's the day on which Jesus rose from the dead.

God has not given us any commandment about what day we should gather for worship. But from the beginning, from the time of the Apostles themselves, the first day of the week has always been special and held special significance. Because it's Christ's Day, the Lord's Day, the day on which He rose from the dead. This is also why it has often been called the "8th Day of Creation", because by our Lord's resurrection He has brought new life and new creation, even as we read that we are "new creations" in Jesus.

I'm in an argument with my dad about these two questions and would like to know what you guys say. :)

Expect a lot of arguments even on here. There are some who have been deceived and will tell you that Christians have to worship on the Sabbath, and will condemn Christians who do what we have done from the beginning--gather for worship on the day of our Lord's resurrection. They will spread lies about it being a pagan invention, they will spread lies saying that the "Catholic Church" changed the day of the Sabbath to Sunday. None of this is true, and there are many here, such as myself, who are more than happy to back up what we say with Scripture and documented historical facts from ancient primary sources.

Beware the leaven of the Sabbatarians.

Except that neither the Eastern Orthodox nor Roman Catholic Church changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. The Sabbath has always been on the 7th day. It's just that there is no commandment that Christians are under any obligation to observe it.

Shabbat is Shabbat.
The Lord's Day is the Lord's Day.

One is Saturday (the Sabbath).
One is Sunday (the Lord's Day).

Two different days.

Sunday (the 1st day of the week) has never been, never will be the Sabbath day. Sunday is the day of His Resurrection. We are also forbidden to fast on Shabbat in Orthodoxy, unlike, I believe, the Romans do...

Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday, I think that is reason enough. Also remember the New Testament wasn't written untill after Our Lord rose from these dead.

We were also blocked from using the Synagogues so probably played a part too.

Historically, Christianity was seen as another Jewish sect. But as the Jews began to forbid Christians from the synagogues, and by 70AD, both were regarded as anti-Rome, Christians started worshipping separately.

In the Didache (The Teachings), which may have been written as early as prior to 100AD, we already see that Christians are worshipping on the Lord's Day, e.g. the first day of the week.

Chap. XIV. - 1. And on the Lord's Day of the Lord come together, and break bread, and give thanks, having before confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure.

By 150AD, a Christian by the name of Justin Martyr wrote,

And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read, as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the president verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things.

So very early on, Christians were worshipping on Sunday rather than on the Sabbath.

Exodus 12:3-14

3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:

4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.

10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord's passover.

12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.

13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

The Passover was the evening of the 15th day. That year, the 14th was on Wednesday, and the 15th was on Thursday. Luke 23:54

54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

That was preparation for the Passover. Luke 22:1

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.

The Passover was the day of the month, not changed to fall on Friday every year.

There was the high Sabbath, the Passover. It was the most important day of the year to them.

John 19:31

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

John called the Passover a Sabbath and an high day. That is the Passover on Thursday. Pilate, the judgment, was being carried out during the preparation of the Passover. On Friday, after the Passover, is when they demanded Pilate seal the tomb, lest in the next few days, the disciples steal the body. They were not too worried on Wednesday during the crucifixion and Thursday of the Passover. It was on Friday, they wanted the tomb sealed.
