John 5:45
“But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.
John 5:43-45
"I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?"
John 5:46
"For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me."
He spoke this to unbelievers. They only said they believed Moses, but they really didn't. Therefore, they were trusting in their carnal understanding of the Law, which led to the adding to and taking from it (leaven). Their hopes were set on the letter of the law so they couldn't see Who it to pointed to. There were others (such as Simeon Luke 2:25-32) who saw it properly.
