  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thomas Merton: Master of Attention by Robert Waldron. The title is a bit misleading because he combines the thought of two of my favorites, Thomas Merton and Simone Weil. The basic premise is nicely captured by Simone Weil's statement "Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer."

I am currently reading a book suggested to me by a counselor titled The Mastery of Love. I will have to finish it before I give it a fair assessment. It makes some interesting points about the human condition, but it is also a little bit weird and rambly.

Death to the BCS

Argues why the BCS system in college football was so horrible
Argues why the whole bowl system needs to be revamped

Although the book was written prior to the official death of the BCS & the introduction of the 4 team playoff, I'd argue most of the book is still relevant today

I am listening to the audiobook of My Life Without God by William Murray. He's the son of the woman who sued to get prayer out of schools, although he eventually ended up converting. It's really good.

I’m reading This Victorian Life by Sarah Chrisman. It’s about a couple who adopts Victorian principles and attire for daily living. Their home is outfitted with old furnishings and they employ period practices in their lifestyle.

Really enjoyed this recently - 1950's sci-fi schlock :)
Completely enjoyable, neat twists and made me laugh and go "oh no!" a couple times
Any book that has Loki in it is always up for grabs as to what is going on ;)
Short book and satisfying ending

Day of the Giants by Lester del Rey

I’m wrapping up Gods and Kings by Dana Thomas. Its about the fashion industry and the changes that occurred when corporations got involved.

I have an afternoon read today by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The Diamond as Big as the Ritz is a short story that focuses on the dark side of wealth. I haven’t read a classic in a bit. I hope this gets me back on track!

And I’m squeezing in The Secret History by Donna Tartt. The book is frequently mentioned when referencing dark academia. It highlights the dangers of elitism and the environments that breed it.

Now I'm onto The Great Divorce.

The ghost who insists on a ridiculous and implausible theology is my favorite part so far.

The Great Divorce is my favorite C. S. Lewis book. A very close runner up is The Screwtape Letters.

The Space Trilogy is a bit dated but I enjoyed those books as well
