This is what born of water means ... :preach::)
Look at the context.
Jesus asked Nicodemus "You are teacher of Israel and you do not know what it means?" ... (paraphrased).
This indicates that only Hebrew scholars understand the meaning.
This means - Old Testament, Creation, Genesis. :)

Peter said this about creation ...
2PE 3:5 ... heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water.
Only Jewish teachers knew about creation and that everything was made by water and out of water.

So being born of water means being created out of water.

But wasn't everything created out of water?
No. Angels were not.
Creation was "visible and invisible" (someplace in Colossians?)

So this means in order for you to be born again ...
You need to be -
1. Born of water - created human and not an angel
2. Born of spirit - spiritual birth later on.

Tally ho!

well, technically babies are in adam..they are legally little sinners!lol
Oops! I was actually thinking particularly of those unborn children who are the child of at least one Christian parent.

As for the state of the unborn child who dies of unregenerate parents then this is one that I will have to leave with the Lord.

While your online, could you maybe let me know what ByTheSpirit and Froggy believe about water baptism - I sort of lost track a few dozen posts (or was that threads) ago.

I am pretty sure they agreed one cannot be baptized on Wednesdays unless it is snowing in Vermont.

ByTheSpirit was saying that snow in Vermont is not mandatory to be baptized on Wednesdays.

Frogster was saying one can be baptized any day even under a lawn sprinkler.

murjahel was worried that children catch a cold with snow in Vermont.

And Bob basically told Frogster to get off the lawn.

Made a lot of sense. :crosseo::groupray::crosseo::swoon:

Oh . . . I was closer than I thought as I had a thing about Wednesday myself (too many confusing letters) but I was thinking it was Kansas during a Blue Moon - thanks for the update.

Froggy might not be too happy with the sprinkler as this sounds suspiciously like sprinkling and not full immersion to me.

As you're a trainee moderator, maybe an early duty could be to suspend me for a week for my recalcitrance.

Who knows, maybe some of these annoying bugs that have occurred over the past 24 hours might go away by then. Things were great with Chrome but now I even have to manually insert commands before I can set some words in italics. Firefox became very unfriendly with CF about a month ago and now Chrome, which was faultless has become even worse.

2. Born of spirit - spiritual birth later on.

Actually the context is about being born again. I got it that it seems to be referring to physical birth, Nicodemus even thought that but Jesus told him no it isn't. Being born again (v3,7) is being born of water and the spirit (v5).

Even in the larger passage, later in chapter 3 John writes about the baptist baptizing, and to start chapter 4 Jesus and his disciples are conducting baptisms. In chapter 2 even, Jesus turns the water into wine, possibly a reference to what is done through the waters of baptism, something ordinary becomes extraordinary as a work of God. A lot of water references in the first 3 chapters of John...

Think Robert Morris explains it well.

Briefly:

There are baptisms - "Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment." Heb 6:2

3 specific baptisms:
1 - one baptism unto salvation Matt 3:11 (The Holy Spirit baptizes us into Christ).
2- water baptism Matt 28:19 (disciples baptized)
3 - in The Holy Spirit Matt 3:11 Jesus baptizes us in The Holy Spirit).

There was a message on youtube.

I decided to visit you guys and see you are still swimming in waters?

You think this might become a perpetual thread?

Hmmmm..I dunno..hard to call.

I am deeply concerned for the Miami man, he of whom Bob said was not saved, because he was not baptized.

Again, John 3:5 is an explanation of John 3:3... to correct Nicodemus' misunderstanding. Nicodemus thought being born again was in reference to a second physical birth. Jesus said no, being born again is to be born of water and spirit.

Something I read the other day that got me thinking was God baptizing the earth in water at the flood. Look at it. The earth was full of evil. God submerged it in water and destroyed the evil. Noah and his family were saved from that death by faith in Christ. When the waters subsided, the earth (and Noah) received new life. This could well be the antitype Peter wrote of in 1 Peter 3:20-21, that the flood was the antitype of baptism. The waters of baptism destroy the evil within and by faith we receive new life. Just a thought
