  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wrote a few articles for The Unspeakable Oath back in the day. One of the articles was about insanity and the historical (and horrible) treatments for it in the 1920s. Chaosium contacted me, and with a couple more writers, I helped expand that into an official CoC supplement about insanity. And then some bits of that got incorporated into the core rules. And that's why my name's on there.

I HAVE THAT BOOK!

I loved that book, however that book was part of the reason why my players requested us playing a different setting for a while.

Mwahahaha...

(Actually, I had nothing to do with the scenarios, just some of the other background information.)

Oh it wasn't the scenarios! It was the mental institutions themselves and the phobias... so many phobias...

Currently playing Monster Hunter 3.

The game is alright. I wish I had the same passion for gaming as I did when I was younger. I just lose interest pretty quickly but I'm having fun with this particular game. : )

Stuck between a rock and hard place. I am almost fully migrated off of Windows on my desktop PC in favor of linux but gaming keeps bringing me back. I will say that Steam especially has made great strides in porting games to Linux but the driver and compositing support is just garbage, and that is mostly nVidia and AMD's fault.

Like seriously I shouldn't have to rebuild drivers from edgers PPA and then find that they've caused massive kernel corruption requiring me to rebuild my machine with Nouveau drivers. NOPE NOPE NOPE. Also image tearing? NOPE.exe.

So am I the only one who's into RPGs here? LOL

I'm absolutely in love with certain 16-bit era RPGs.

The only ones I played as a kid were Illusion of Gaia, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, my younger brother played Earthbound, but I never got into it. There was also Super Mario RPG, which was fantastic.

It wasn't until years later when I discovered emulators that I started to get back and play some games for the first time. Seiken Densetsu 3, the sequal to Secret of Mana which was never released outside of Japan was fan-translated and is an exquisitely good game. The first Final Fantasy game I've ever really played is Final Fantasy V, I've also played Final Fantasy IV. I still need to play VI.

Another Japan-only title that I really liked was Ranma 1/2: Treasure of the Red Cat Gang, but only because I really, really, really loved the anime to begin with. As a teenager I owned both Ranma 1/2 movies, all the OVAs, a bunch of the episodes from various seasons, and several copies of the manga. My freshman year in high school my school binder was covered with Ranma 1/2 pictures I printed out and glued all over it.

I never got into any of the playstation era RPGs, as I never got much into the Playstation (1, 2, or 3). After the N64 my next significant console was the Xbox, and I specifically ended up buying an Xbox in order to play Knights of the Old Republic which I played on a friend's Xbox and fell in love with. I fell in love with Bioware, and have played and loved just about every RPG they've made since. KOTOR2, Jade Empire, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc.

Skyrim is the first Elder Scrolls game I've ever played, and I do quite love it. I also have played a little bit of both Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

As such I tend to prefer Western RPGs when it comes to 3d graphics, I've never really played a 3d JRPG. So there's a whole swath of JRPGs that were released on various Playstation consoles that I've simply never touched, and more that I don't even know about. I've also never been much of a handheld gamer, the last handheld I owned was the original 1989 Gameboy. I've messed around with the GBA, DS, and PSP that friends have owned, but I get exhausted too easily on handhelds; I've messed with some GBA titles via emulators, but that's about it (I think I just need a bigger screen, a controller or a keyboard to enjoy gaming).

Ranma 1/2 was fantastic as an anime. I am going through an anime rebirth right now.

Anyone playing the Elder Scrolls online beta? How is it?

I got invited 4-5 times to the beta but haven't pulled the trigger and tried it. Reviews are mixed. I think most elder scrolls fans wished they just made another single player RPG instead of an MMO.

I played the closed beta and the open, I couldn't get to level 10 I was so bored.

I saw a review of the beta not too long ago that put one of the problems quite nicely.

In Skyrim you are the hero, the one, the only great dragonborn who can save the land.

In ESO you are some guy.

It has alot of the same feel mechanics wise as playing Skyrim, but none of the heart. In skyrim I cared that the town was going to be attacked by a dragon, in ESO... meh...

Oh and IGN just put up this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58RIT7TTxjg

This game originally started out a joke, but people loved the idea so much they turned it into a full fledged game.

This is pretty much in line with what I expected.

There's no way I'm not going to pick up Goat Simulator.

I'm starting to get into watching Let's Plays again. Currently watching a Let's Play from Nintendocaprisun. The Let's Play is of the game Plants Vs. Zombies 2.

Unfortunately Let's Plays consume a lot of time, which is in limited supply for me these days..

Wish they existed when I was younger, I would have loved them. For some reason it's almost more fun watching someone else play a video game than it is to play it yourself, lol.

I'm a HUGE fan of Game Grumps and Steam Train. The crew from these shows come out with 3 videos each day and they are only about 10 minutes each so it's not all that time consuming and since they have an insane amount of fun playing together, I'm sure it's more fun to watch them than it is to actually play yourself.

Isn't that basically every MMORPG though?

I've watched a lot of Game Grumps. I've watched a lot of the older ones with JonTron since I also watch his show whenever he makes a video.

In most MMOs you are usually the hero who does something special. You just have to ignore that every other person playing did the exact same quests and is also the hero. Or your raid group kills the main evil boss, but so does many others. And you do it multiple times. MMO's are just a different animal that need to be looked at in a different way if you want the story to make sense.

I usually didn't like being the hero. I used mods that disabled the dragonborn quest line and instead I started as a low level assassin in jail. First thing I had to do was escape from prison and then make my way as a nobody. ;)
