• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. I'm not quite sure what you are asking for in this thread, but I'll offer my comments. If this isn't what you intended for this thread, I'll edit my post, with no hard feelings.

What works for me:
  • Prayer, not with another person, just me and God
  • Quiet, no noise.
  • Alone time. If I'm alone, who can I hurt, other than myself? (Now, when it comes to this, I do make sure I am with people, especially my sometimes overprotective husband. Most of the time, he's right on the money...)
  • Wanna make my mood swings worse? Give me meds and see what happens... :D (I laugh, but I know it's no joke.)
  • Hurling a pillow across a room instead of throwing breakable objects and breaking plates. (Many a feather has flown in my bedroom!)
  • Laughing instead of crying, even though it may not be appropriate.
  • Repeating my new found favorite phrase: "God help me please!"
I'm a mess, I know. But sometimes, it's fun! :D

:clap: it's exactly what i meant for this post!!! sorry if i wasn't clear. i thought it would make everyone feel good and give others insight to us. :D

the list of things (of what i need) change. that's why i put "this... vs that" :sorry:

when i said the same thing might not work every time.
i mean, every 1/2 hour even... :sorry: i can be complicated!

  • for me when i need to avoid people, but get out. my family takes me to feed the ducks. lay out and look at the clouds. or lay out and look at the stars. out for ice cream in the car. or a nice drive on the back roads listening to my fav music. feeding the squirrels. visiting the library. swimming. fishing. ( or i loose myself on playing word games on computer :angel: ) ... after i get calmed then it's easier to focus on quiet time with my Father.

Most times if I am hitting a low cycle, I try to work on some project that takes my mind off things.
Project vs. Being in Public
Quiet vs. Noise

If that doesn't work, I simply tell my wife we need some alone time.
That is a signal to her that I want to talk.
She even will beat me to it sometimes.

try it sometime ^_^...

when you feel moody in anger and frustration... try this. sit with back strait, feet flat on floor and breath as relaxed as you can. then, try to smile with half of your face only (force it if you have to). :liturgy:

ok. you are thinking, dee is whacked right? :p ...

actually this does two things medically tested :priest: ... breathing in a strait up posistion produces body chemicals that help, from the blood and oxygen flow through body. and the half smile will cause you to really smile, which produces a chemical that is sent through those muscles releasing the same chemical when you laugh and smile.

:D i tried it when i was furious! it worked. ofcourse it was temporary. but it helped me get rid of the knots in my brain and stomache from being tense in frustration.

... rushed and confused thinking. just do things that are calming, soothing, distracting. when you relax and try not to worry, then problem solving and focusing on ways to cope and dealling with why you feel this way is tons easier. :hug:

:hug: i should add this. came up in a conversation...

i have learned for the most part what to do. how to keep myself in balance. when stress keeps me from being ok, and it comes down to keeping myself safe, i get help from people that are supportive... and i know everybody at the local phyciatric crisis center :blush: ... i just do whatever i need to, to stay safe, and help me cope.
