  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Still rather missing the original Aramaic for reference of the other rock. Without it, we can only guess that the same word was used. Semantics aside, even assuming the words are the same, and that for some reason Jesus wanted the rock and foundation of his church to be a flawed human being... well, never mind.
If Jesus wanted someone on earth to represent Him, he had no choice but flawed human beings. In fact, ALL his apostles were flawed. They all, but one, ran away at the slightest problem.

Yeah. I forgot Jesus hadn't fully thought through the holy spirit yet.

And yet, when Jesus was speaking to the Apostles, in Matthew 16, what was the venue?

Wow, awesome photo Bro!
Thanks. It's the site in Caesarea Philippi, formerly called Paneas where Jesus brought his apostles to reflect on who He is.

Because it is a play on words, Peter meaning rock. You are the rock and upon this rock...
The name "Peter" itself means "rock." And Peter is later called "Cephas" (1 Cor. 15:5) which also means "rock." Here's an article that explains it more in-depth: Peter the Rock

Yeah. I forgot Jesus hadn't fully thought through the holy spirit yet.
He did tell them, though, that it was necessary that he leave them, or the Holy Spirit would not come. It is through the Holy Spirit that Peter, the apostles, and their successors, have their power. No other way.

Suggesting that the rock is Jesus, and his representative on earth is the holy spirit who dwells in Christians?

Jesus left a visible Church on earth, why must it be either Jesus is the rock or Peter is the rock? Jesus installed his Apostle to carry the Church forward after Jesus was no long with them.

I read the original topic of the thread to essentially mean that Peter is the rock on which the church is founded, and believing otherwise is just silly. But if Jesus began his church with a cracked foundation, he set us up for failure, so I find it hard to believe the rock referred to anything but himself and his teachings. If Peter is the rock on which the church is built, I'm switching to atheism.

But since he's not, I will remain a believer even with my limited mental capacity and imperfect understandings, and I'll be grateful that Jesus provided every Christian a direct line to him.

Whom or what, on earth, would you suggest for the foundation? Keep in mind that He had not sent the Holy Spirit, yet, and that the HS is the guide of the Church. The pope, or Peter, is the instrument.

Only Jesus Christ himself is capable of being the foundation. He is eternal enough for that.

The Church's one foundation is Christ. But Peter is the Rock upon which the Church on earth was built.
Not any more so than the other apostles or Paul, or anyone who has the holy spirit. No one person besides Christ can have that authority. Jesus even had to correct Peter and his beliefs using visions. The most I can say for Peter is that he showed us an example of what following Jesus looks like, but that can be said for many others.

No. the THIS ROCK which was referred back to was THE ROCK in the previous phrase.
Nvmnd what the OT says about rocks and stones let's just look at the NT

~ a wise person builds a house upon the rock~
not just Christ but His word about the revealed will of the Heavenly Father to produce individual members who can withstand the testing fires (1 Cor. 3:12-13)

~we all drink of the same spiritual drink and the same spiritual rock, which is Christ~
Christ as the real rock is following His believers. Not seeing a need for Peter to represent here

~built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone;~
corresponding with the rock in Matt. 16:18, which is not only Christ but also the revelation concerning Christ, the foundation of the apostles and prophets is the revelation they received for the building of the church.

~all living stones being built up into a spiritual priesthood~
Peter received his new name at conversion and at the revelation from the Father about the Christ, I believe we have the same experience

~These are the hidden reefs in your love feasts, ~
Greek word meaning rock that we are to look out for (behind me satan?)

~And he showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb~
symbolized by Moses when bringing forth the water out of the rock..

Peter is not the topic of the story, far from it.

Wrong. Just as a king (Isaiah 22, for example) has a prime minister who speaks with his authority, so Christ made Peter his. "What doors you open, no one shall shut, what doors you close, no one shall open." He spoke this to Peter alone.

Who claimed that Peter is the topic of the story, other than the OP title?

The Old Testament has to be interpreted in light of the New. And Jesus (God) was the one who changed Simon's name to Peter (which means rock). There's a prophecy about this in Isaiah 22.

Who do you think that the revelation from the Father came from? It was thru the Holy Spirit and this is what was being referred to as that which the church is founded on!!!! The instrument is the vessels that He has prepared, not just Peter or the pope but every believer

It's irrelevant. Metaphors can be used for more than one thing, and it's okay.
