Alright, smarty pants. Explain to stupid ole' me why healthcare costs are three times higher in the US compared to the UK.
Private, for-profit health care systems drive up costs; letting health care related companies and pharmaceutical companies charge whatever they want drives up costs (Abilify is $900 for a month's prescription in the US, and $300 for a month's in Canada, for instance); and of course, government organizations (like a government-run health insurance company, or national health service), as large bodies, can negotiate for prices on things much better than smaller, private companies.

Everyone being able to have access to the health care they need is just a side benefit. ; )

I stand corrected. Though I still wonder to what extent obesity rates drive up healthcare costs in the US.

I do agree with price controls for prescription drugs, by the way. I used to pay about $280 for Provigil, a cognitive stimulant that helps me work, after insurance covered the rest. Since I didn't want to pay so much for it each month, I now have to order it from India at a lower price and risk getting caught by Customs each time. Access to medicine should be made affordable for everyone.
