Yup, I'm a Tolkien fan. ^_^ I've read the LOTR books (the third one was my fave). Has anyone here read some of his other works besides the LOTR trilogy? If so, which ones would you reccomend to others?
read the Silmarillion. The history of ME is fascinating. i particulary enjoy the story of Turin. in fact my username comes from the Sil. Unfinished tales is good as well, but not as interesting. i've read other stories by him as well. i don't remember what they were called right now, but they were pretty good.

as you might of guessed, i'm a huge Tolkien fan. I've read the trilogy countless times, the Hobbit almost as many. i ate slept and breathed LotR for about three years. i still love it, but i'm not quite as obsessed.

I read the hobbit and the trilogy a few years ago. I reread the first book, but haven't had the time or motivation to reread the other two. I'm working on the Silmarillion right now, and it is somewhat difficult to read...I just don't try to understand and I like it a lot better. It has beautiful language, the opening chapter about the Music of the Ainur is absolutely incredible, my favorite part so far.

I've tried reading the Simarillion. Imagine reading a religious text that focuses on a large portion of the historic bits of mythology. There were a few good bits, but it is boring.

I'm a total Tolkien fan - so much so that I even have a forum dedicated to him. (PM me if you want the url - I don't want to do any shameless advertising)

I loved the Sil, not so much the first time I read it but when I read it again after reading The Hobbit and LotR, it made a lot more sense. One thing I'm not that good with is geography, so that kind of hindered the process. The Sil does have a great creation story. :D

I have read the LotR Trilogy and the Hobbit. I really want to read the Silmarillion but can never find it anywhere.

Now that I think about it I think I read another one of his books...Roverandom or something like that. It was ages ago, so I can't remember.

Hi!!! I love Tolkien.....I've read the first book 3 times, the second book twice, and the 3rd book once (but that's only because one of my friends has it and we haven't gotten it back....).

Aarg! Get it back, get it back! I hate it when people do that personally!

Tolkien is awesome!

A suggestion for fand trying to get through the Silmarillion: Try buying or checking out the Audio version of the Silmarillion from your library. If you listen to it a couple times it makes the book easier and makes you appreciate the story more.

On a related note: I want a movie to be made about Tolkien and C.sS.Lewis. I think it would be interesting and inspiring.

I really enjoy tolkien's works. Its incredible how he is able to create entire languages almost on a whim. I love the stories, but I'm not so much a fan of his writing style. I don't mind the older dialect that he uses, I just don't care so much for his style. I read his works all the time though, because I love the stories and the world that he created.

I would hardly think that his languages are products of whims, being that they're functional languages-- this isn't just someone cobbling together a bunch of gibberish words and calling it a "language". IIRC, Tolkien's linguistic studies gave birth to the Quenya and Sindarin languages, which he later used as classroom examples of language development for his Oxford philology students. The catalyst for the creation of Middle-Earth (begun in the Silmarillion) was Tolkien's desire to create a people to speak the languages he designed...

Ok, I'll clarify what I meant

It's the fact that he was able to do it so naturally, and that so much came from when he was in a rabbit-hole during WWI. I've also been told that he created the fundamentals for a language when he was 12.
