I am also a huge fan of Tolkien. I have read The Lord of the Ring too many times to count and even now am re-reading it.
I had a copy of the Silmarillion that I read then loaned to someone and never got it back.
Yes it is a hard book to read unless you enjoy detail which this book is full of just like War and Peace is full of detail, as is Les Mierables.
I have read both and am now reading Les Miserables while re-reading The Lord of the Ring.
I was hugely disappionted with the Movies that were made how he changed the enterance of the characters and made some do things that were not in the book.
Example when Frodo is put on the horse to escape the nine black riders it was not Aragorn's love that provided the horse but Glorifindal that had provided the horse.
Then the way they had Sauruman and Galdalf fight in the tower was very much away from the book.
Next when Frodo was stabbed with the sword was after he had met up with Strider not before like they had in the movie.
I also wished that they had included Tom Bombadill in the movie.
But over all I enjoyed the movie for it's short comings.

Frodo wasn't stabbed before he met Strider in the movie was he? I'm pretty sure I remember Frodo getting stabbed by the Witch King on Weather Top just like the book.

I do pretty much agree with your opinion on the movies though. I enjoyed the movies but I was disappointed with some of the changes. There were some changes done with the movies that didn't bother me because I expected some of them, however, there were other changes that were done which I thought was completely unnecessary.

Another big fan of JRR Tolkien here. I am glad I got middle earth down pat in my imagination before I saw the movies. Tolkien's description of the weather in various locations is fantastic. Trees floating rootless in a morning mist. So many very simple sentences that describe so much. "can't a hobbit walk from the water to the river in peace?"

Tolkien's writing (and thinking) style is part of the magic of Middle-Earth.

I think that the 3rd book was the best, but that's just my opinion.....

I've never read any of his other works...but my bro read the Silmerillion.....he said it was really boring...

Read the Sil, and also read the Book of Lost Tales 1 and 2. Some boring parts, but it gives a foundation to the other works and answers some questions or curiosities that arise in the trilogy.

.

Was it the witch King of Agmar or just a ringwraith? He had met Strider though cuz they brought him to Rivendell after that and Strider (Aragorn) told Arwen to take him cuz she was the faster rider. Just re-watched that first movie a few days ago. We have the long versions with all the extra scenes. :)

It was the Witch-king. In both the movie and the book. And forget Arwen... what about Glorfindel? And his horse?
