My clothes gets destroyed in short order and I do not use bleach. Both colors and whites for me. My issue seems to be how hard our water is. It will cause whites to not get white, all clothes to start to fray and generally eats my clothes. :( For me I found some things can help, but nothing resolves. :/

I hadn't thought of the water. Mine just started this in the last 6 months since I have been hand washing. My water is hard also. Maybe I am not rinsing good. I wonder if you used a softner?:)

No, I have never used a softener, the smell of them bother me. Our water is about as hard as water can be (people never believe me, but close to 265 grains!). A water softener would not help at all since at best they may lower the grains 10 to 20. We have to drink distilled water and use distilled water to cook and the hard water eats our washer and dishwasher every 5 years or so.
What I use in the laundry is this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004U86V8S
It helps some, but clothes still get destroyed, it just takes longer to destroy them. ;) I also stopped using the dryer on the clothes that gets destroyed fastest, that seems to help as well. I hang dry them, or put them in the dryer only long enough to smooth them out then hang them to dry.

I wonder if Michie might have an answer. She has a lot of knowledge with this type of thing. I wish I could help. There are odor less softners. I guess I was thinking hard water use a softener, lol.
Happy day!
