Tinnitus sufferers

    Tinnitus is typically caused by exposure to loud noise, leading to hearing damage. It is neurological, as the nerves themselves are damaged or dead. There are drugs available, such as piracetam, that can help, though their use is off label and your doctor may not know about it.

    An audiologist (not mine) who has a doctorate degree in audiology research explained tinnitus is similar - but not exactly the same - to phantom pain in amputees. It happens in the brain, not the ear.

    I don't know why, but tinnitus rarely occurs in my right ear and never in both ears at the same time.

    Who told you tinnitus starts in the ears? It is not news that the problem is in our brains.

    I do - both ears all the time.

    What is REALLY annoying is when the 2 are out of phase with each other.

    I used to have it mainly in the right ear, but sometimes in both. I don't have it at all now but until I first saw this thread, I hadn't noticed when it stopped, I don't kmow why.

    My friend told me his tinnitus started when he got married! ^_^

    Mine started from standing too close to a drummer who was way too heavy on his cymbals.
