Mrs. Prayer Meeting died recently at the First Neglected Church on Worldly Avenue. Born many years ago in the midst of great revivalism she was a strong, healthy child, fed largely on testimony and spiritual holiness, and soon growing into world wide prominence as one of the most influential members of the famous Church family.

For the past several years Sister Prayer Meeting had been in failing health, gradually wasting away until rendered helpless by stiffness of knees and coldness of heart, inactivity and weakness of purpose and will power. Her last whispered words were inquiries concerning markets of trade and places of worldly amusements. Her older brother, Class Meeting, has been dead for many years.

Experts, including Dr. Work and Dr. Joiner, disagreed as to the cause of her fatal illness, administering large does of organization, socials, contests, drives, and religious education, but to no avail. A post-mortem showed deficiency of spiritual food coupled with a lack of fasting, faith, heartfelt religion, shameless desertion, non-support as contributing causes of her death. Only a few were present at her last rites, sobbing over memories of her past beauty and power. Carefully selected pall-bearers were urged to bear her remains tenderly away, but failed to appear. There were no flowers. Her favorite hymns, "Amazing Grace" and "Rock of Ages", were not sung. Miss Irma Modern rendered "Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere", but none had any idea where this fancied isle might be. The body rests in the beautiful cemetery of Bygone Glories, a waiting the summons from above.

In honor of her going, the church doors will be closed on Wednesday nites, save on the third Wednesday of each month when the Ladies’ Pink Lemonade Society serves refreshment to the members of the Handball Team.

Sad but all too true for many churches, not least of which being the Army.

I remember reading of the early days of the Army's work in my home town of Hull. A 7am Sunday morning Prayer meeting attracted 1,500 people.

Now people complain if there is a sunrise service once a year on Easter Sunday

"It was said of former times: ‘The church was never so powerful in the world as when she had nothing to do with the world.’ The reason for this is that it was clearly understood that the two were set in total contradistinction from each other." ---W. "Sociologists are having a field day in human affairs. They have deluded the masses to believe that men and women are really not responsible for their wrongdoing. They insist instead that wrongdoers are victims of poor parenting, adverse environmental influences, genetic inheritance."

"The church is looking for better methods. God is looking for better men. What the church needs today is not more machinery or better, not new organization or more novel methods, but men who the Holy Spirit can use, men of prayer. The Holy Spirit does not flow through methods but through men."

"Such words as "sin" and "sinner" are almost becoming archaic in our language expect among a very small circle of hard-core Christians who still accept God’s special disclosure about the human condition. These people are regarded by society as fanatics who are out of the fringe of things. They have no part in the mainstream of modern thought."

I met a guy who was a YP Bandsman because there was no Methodist Chruch nearby. He today is a keen supporter of The Salvation Army, and heads up a Methodist organisation called the John Wesley Mission Society.

During the Cold War, South Africa and Mozambique formed a North-South line. (TSA was banned in Mozambique). After the "iron curtain" of Mozambique came down, as with TSA, TJWMS also went in. In a remote village in Mozambique they were telling about Jesus through an interpreter. Here is part there conversation:

Headman: This Jesus you talk about, how long ago was He on earth?

Missionary: 2000 years.

Headman: Why did it take you so long to get here?

"Ask for repentance in your prayer and nothing else, neither for divine lights, nor miracles, nor prophecies, nor spiritual gifts—nothing but repentance. Repentance will bring you humility, humility will bring you the Grace of God, and God will have in His Grace everything you need for your salvation, or anything you might need to help another soul."
—Elder Paisios from Mt. Athos Copied from the Web.
