The book was likely written between 760 and 753 BC. The author is the prophet Amos. Its theme is judgment against the sins of social injustice. Amos was a shepherd and farmer whom God called prophesy during the reigns of Uzziah (792-740 BC) in the southern kingdom and Jeroboam II (793-753 BC) in the north. Both kingdoms were in a period of political stability and prosperity: nevertheless, it was also a time of idolatry and corruption. The rich and powerful oppressed the poor. Amos denounced the people of Israel fro their social injustice and their apostasy, and he warned that disaster would come because they had broken the covenant. Amos pleads with them to repent and return to God. The book closes with a promise of future restoration through an annointed king.
