The word "field" is a racial slur now.

That's what happens when you VALUE freedom above EVERYTHING.
I don't know what freedom has to do with it.

We were never marching for the abolition of the word "field."

If that's what we've gotten down to...if that's all the sociology professors have to teach about...we have to admit that we've met and even exceeded our Civil Rights goals.

And I don't think they're saying the word is RACIST, just that it could hold some connotations in that context.

Is it worthwhile? Well that's another conversation.
"Some connotations" is pretty broad. I mean, do we have to rename "cotton" now?

I'll bet not a single one of those complaining employees had ever worked in a field.

But I'll also bet 99% of all of us have an ancestor within the last 5 generations who did work in some kind of field.

When I was a teenager, I worked in someone else's field one day...kind of an experiment to see what "chopping cotton" was like. If I ever needed a reason to get a college degree, that one day chopping cotton provided all the reason I'd ever need. I did, however, do a lot of outdoor work for my grandfather on his property, so I was not a stranger to hard work under a hot sun.

I'm not embarrassed by the fact that my ancestors worked in fields, first those of slaveowners, then fields of their own. Certainly, the word "field" isn't going to "trigger" me.

This horse manure has long been absurd.

This is a result of making "black studies" a college major.
Nothing ridiculous coming from California surprises me anymore. It just expected.

This is why I’m glad I live in Texas where we don’t care if someone might be offended.

Oh please. Offended people in TX are banning books right and left. Well, mostly right.

Well, another entity has jumped on this bandwagon.

Yeah, some sociology PhD candidate invented this for their dissertation and it's spreading now like wildfire.
Ok by considering the word “field” to be racist aren’t they themselves being stereotypical of those who work in fields by implying that field workers consist of one particular race? What next, NASCAR driver’s?

The unrestrained mind begins to have unrestrained and unreasonable thoughts.

Mastering your knowledge and your mind is not freedom; that is work.

I'm definitely NOT saying this particular action is a worthwhile one...just to be clear.

or about making smart choices about power infrastructure after people die due to negligence.

And you ABSOLUTELY do care. Don't be silly. I don't recall the drag queens being treated like bastions of free speech by the right.

Careful! I believe "Master" is another word that offends certain people. ;)

Yes I agree. But recasting language for such flimsy connotations is pretty silly.

Exactly they don't care that drag queens are offended that they can't dance suggestively around children. Or that they are offended when they are not allowed to sexualize and groom kids.

I see it is a trend, now. There will be more and more words of the language targeted, for being offensive in some way or another, as more are being eliminated from our language. After all, no girls (how long do I have before I would supposed to be not saying that word?) are being named Karen when they are born anymore. I was perceiving this which is becoming a trend when I heard for the first time a long while ago the word moist is offensive. I don't agree it should be considered so. And of course the word field is far to general to exclude. I find it hard to believe there are many books at all without the word field in them. Where will this lead? This is very disturbing.
