Our game tonight was cancelled because of EOGT's, so we won't have another game until next Wednesday. I'm getting my family the game schedule so that they can all meet me there for the games. We'll have our own chairs and our own little cheering section.

Too bad the next game isn't on Friday, you could reinforce the Catholic prejudices by eating fried fish.

End Of Grade Testing. All the fourth and fifth graders have it this week. Since the games can run kind of late, the League postponed all games during testing so the kids wouldn't be overly tired for school.

And my Rosary is pretty much what 'gave me away'. My daughter had given me a plastic one that I had looped through the strap of my bag. Someone noticed it and said, "Oh. Are you Catholic?" With the tone of, "Please say you aren't." Then it seemed everyone started talking at once...I heard 'cover-up', if they were allowed to marry it wouldn't happen, cult, imagine what must go on in convents, and the comment about being glad the Coach wasn't Catholic...all within like 30 seconds. I just turned my back. I held the Rosary, and thought I would have a blister from rubbing the crucifix with my thumb through the game. I couldn't even pray coherently, I just kept thinking, "Please, please...please..."

It's easier here to deal with that kind of thing. It's not as personal somehow, even when it still hurts. I've never had anyone look at me as if I were filthy. I don't know how to respond to it, besides ignoring it.

Bless your heart for putting up with all that ... you share in the sufferings of our Lord ... He certainly knows and understands what you're going through and I pray that He helps you to respond as He did and would during times like these.

I wouldn't mind being a moderator, but my catholicism is very outdated and I am not presently attending the Catholic church although I was confirmed less than ten years ago ... does that make me a lapsed Catholic ... or a backslider???

Thank you Lily. I'm glad to have a respite before going back to face them all again, and I hope that nothing more will come of it. I won't let them ruin my pleasure in watching my son play, and only God will be able to help them if any of this comes back on my child. I can be pretty meek, but not when it comes to my babies.

Perhaps we need a list of "things that Catholics do not believe" that gets pinned somewhere, for straw men arguments that get brought up frequently.

i.e.:
1. Catholics do not believe that apostolic tradition supercedes the Bible.
2. Catholics do not believe that apostolic tradition replaces Jesus' teachings.
etc.

It's amazing how many people here try to argue against Catholicism but instead argue against some warped version of Catholicism that arises from their own misconceptions.

About the Little League upset: just remember that people (most people, it seems!) have little minds and short memories. They have forgotten all the accused teachers, scoutmasters, coaches, police officers, friends' parents, "funny uncles" and lecherous grandpas. San Bernardino, California, is going through a particularly rough time now, swamped in accusations from all areas. The priest who was recently extradited from San Diego to Massachusetts had served briefly in the San Bernardino diocese in the early nineties. There are rumblings about past accusations against priests from years ago. But right now on the front page, there's a picture of a 33-year-old woman who taught science at a local high school. Last week, she picked up a student of hers on a Monday evening, and they drove to Las Vegas for three fun-filled days and nights of *something.* She's insisting they didn't have sex. They boy says they did. What does the woman have to say for herself? "I'm sorry I did that. I'm going to miss teaching."

San Bernardino is also the headquarters of Western Region Little League. A few years ago, some accusations surfaced against a very high-profile LL coach. A group of parents banded together, offered to put their homes up for bail money, and swore the man was honorable and would never harm a child. More information came to light. A trail of accusations was found wherever he had coached in the past. More kids came forward, to tell their stories. There was a MONUMENTAL backpedaling by the parents, and his support dwindled away. One parent did speak up, and talked about the absolute betrayal everyone felt.

One of the parents of a teammate said he'd be concerned if your son's coach was Catholic? The coach being NON-Catholic is no guarantee of anything! If he's an adult male who works with kids, he's suspect these days! Better contact the Little League administration in your area to see if the coaches have been fingerprinted and checked out!

Little people, little minds, Zoo. I swear, some people just open their mouths and let the words flow out like a waterfall. A very POLLUTED one, at that!

Well said, Vow - how quickly people forget what's going on around them. My DH and I recently completed our training through a private foster care agency that trained us to be theraputic foster parents - 90 percent of the children we receive will have suffered some form of abuse or neglect. Pointing fingers at one specific group or person representive of a group is just ludicrous. People who abuse children are EVERYWHERE and from EVERY race, religion, culture etc etc etc et al ad nauseaum .......

Pray for us as we embark on this new adventure in providing a safe, loving environment for a child in need. The age group we are looking for is birth to age seven, so that our youngest will have someone close to his age to play with and be a "big" brother. Our next oldest is ten years older so the gap there for our youngest is pretty noticeable when it comes to playing games and such.

We will also train for a new program that will launch in our state (Virginia) that hopes to reduce the amount of time children are in foster care from 2.9 years to 1.6 years - it opens the door for us to be able to adopt - which in our state, through our private agency would be free.

We live in a very rural area so it may be some time before we get a child (especially our age group). The age group that they have the most need for is 10-16 ... which we prayerfully considered, but still felt led to stick with birth to age seven (actually it was age five to go with the age of our youngest, but we tacked on two years because these children tend to be two years behind developmentally).

Whew - big change in topic there - but I thought I better share this with you all - cause it's one reason I cannot commit to being a moderator at this time - once I get a child I may not be able to access the computer as much as I have been - which is no big loss on my part cause it's for a higher cause.

Wouldn't it be something if I got a child from a Catholic home and "had to" take them to Mass I would love that. We have applied to care for children from all races as well as those who are handicapped (my DH and I are hearing impaired) and/or mildly retarded (i.e. down syndrome).

Please pray for us.

DH and I considered being foster parents years ago, when the kids were younger. My son didn't have a problem with it, but my daughter was just entering puberty, and looked upon it as a violation of her space, so we backed off. I'd like to consider it again after we retire.

The need for foster parents is monumental for the teen years; unfortunately, that is also the time of life when a young person is most unmanageable. To open yourself to the abuse by an abused teen is a very difficult ministry indeed. I certainly understand why you might pass.

Next time, simply look them in the eye and say, "On September 11, 2001, 29 Muslims killed over 6,000 people in the United States. In your estimation, is every Muslim in the world guilty for the actions of those 29?"

If they say, "Well, no, of course not," then immediately say, "Then why do you obviously think that every Catholic priest in America, every Catholic bishop, every Catholic cardinal, and every last lay Catholic should be punished for the actions of less than 3% of the American priesthood? We don't all share in their guilt."

Then give them a good, long, slow glare, turn, and walk away.
