Breathless now, the girl nevertheless picked up her pace. Trellises covered with swinging vines flashed by until she all but tubmled into a shady courtyard dominated by a fountain. It was sculpted into the shape of a sword, and at the base of the sword was a single gilded chair.
"You are late. Again." the occupant of the chair stated with an icy hint to her voice.
"Sorry, my lady. But I was reading, and lost track of time." the girl apologized, sucking air into her lungs.
"Well, you had better not be late for your assignment." The woman in the chair scowled.
"Assignment?" The girl cocked her head.
"Yes! Why else do you think I called you here today, Aneirin? To polish my shoes?! I think not." The woman's scowl deepened. "I sense a distubance at the gate. I want you to go investigate the cause of this disturbance, and see if it could possible help us in our pusuit of dominince for our goddess Chama." She waved her hand. "Leave immediately. You are dismissed."
Aneirin had a million questions floating through her mind, but she dared not voice them to the High Priestess. "Yes, my lady." She bowed and backed out of the courtyard, retracing her steps.
This latest 'assignment' puzzled her. Normally she wasn't even allowed off the temple grounds, let alone all the way to the Gate! She headed for the stables, sighing in confusion. Once there, she saddled a white mare and left quickly. If the High Preistess told you to leave immediately, it meant you had to leave immediately, or else face her rath.
The mare's pounding hoofbeats echoed off the stone walls as Aneirin left the temple and the mare picked up speed until she was galloping through the Citadel to the gate.
