Though God has foreknowledge of all things His actions needed to correctly reflect that through demonstrating His wisdom: otherwise He could be blamed for not taking the proper measures to ensure that everything was set in place for our good. The story of Adam and Eve is a perfect example of God giving man the choice between life and death: this is represented by the two literal trees in the middle of the garden:
1) The Tree of Life.
2) The Tree of Death.
God warned Adam and Eve to stay away from death for they would die but, since they did not: that is why we still die today and, why Jesus had to die on the cross and be resurrected in order that we might have the chance to eat from the Tree of Life.
The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was the tree of which God said "Thou shalt not eat..." and after Adam ate the feast prepared by his helper(Eve, removed from the opening in Adam's side after slumber came upon him) their eye sight was changed. They suddenly realized they were naked and ashamed. God asks "Where art thou? Who has told you that you were naked?" and "Hast thou eaten...?
These words from Jesus pertain to what happened to Adam's eyes after eating. His perception changed. Adam once was alone and walked in the Day/Light with God, not seeing darkness/evil.
Matthew 6:22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
Jesus Christ is The Way/The Door back. To find the Son is to lose your soul/self-life to find it again In Christ. Only God can reveal His Truth by spirit...the power of the same spirit that rose Jesus' body from he grave...IF we believe. Faith exercised by truly seeking The Way to overcome the darkness/sin.
The human mind can never gain understanding of the things of God...who had a purpose/plan since before the foundations of the world were laid..."Behold the lamb who was slain before the foundations of the world."
Jesus Christ appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin..
John 9:41 Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
