You can only hold someone for 72 hours before you have to make the complaint or release them.

The complaint can be made long before the prosecutor is ready for trial or even before specific charges are made. The prosecutor need only convince the judge that the person cannot be released for reason of public safety or probability of flight to keep the suspect incarcerated until the trial.

Your following comments about hate crimes are irrelevant. That's not what we're talking about here.

None of them have the real interests of a fair and just society in mind

People riot when they have given up on any “legitimate” path to a fair and just society. Peaceful protest doesn’t work. The criminal justice system doesn’t work. People kneeling peacefully at football games didn’t work. Asking nicely hasn’t worked. Begging hasn’t worked. Never in their lives have they enjoyed a fair and just society, why would they have any faith in one now?

Ok Kirk, good to have someone who understands this here. How would you evaluate the evidence?

I see China using the pandemic as an excuse for moving in on Hong Kong, removing all their freedoms that they were once granted..

At least it was a distraction, because the police brutality against students, and Hong Kong totalitarian legislation was the international news story before the incidence of the virus. It's unfortunate how that works...

This is much more succinct of a point I was trying to make earlier.

And that is only what we see in the news, imagine what's really going on

What are we talking about? You do realize that a criminal conviction in negligent homicide can be anywhere from 6 months to 10 years. This is a first time offender, very good legal representation, highly unlikely to get more than 5 years, off in 2 1/2 for good behavior plus they get time served during the trial. If the trial takes 1 1/2 years, not unlikely they do 1 year in a prison.

How many more people need to get shot to make a point? Since when is looting and burning a legitimate expression of disapproval? Two wrongs still don't make things right.
I cannot believe you are comparing the JUSTIFIED riots to the murder of hundreds of innocent black citizens.

The question of whether Derek Chauvin is guilt of murder (or any lesser criminal homicide) separate from any hate crime questions. Those are separate crimes.
No they aren't! That is double jeopardy. You get to try him once for the death. That is it. You can claim it was negligent homicide, first degree murder or a hate crime. But he is protected under the law from being charged in multiple trials for the same crime.

Second of all the prosecutor doesn't have a complaint that says "hey judge you figure it out", that is what the prosecutor and his investigators job is. They say what the man is being tried for and then he makes his defense. If you charge him with negligent homicide it is a different defense from premeditated murder which is different from a hate crime.

first time ever i agree with aussie, hehe. there are no justified riots. if you feel outraged, fine, so do I. But you don't have the right to destroy someone's property, because of ur feelings.

Not exactly. He can also be charged with human rights violations by the feds.
