Hi Goodbook, have you got the name of the author?...it sounds very interesting...
Soul Gardening
Cultivating the good life
By Terry Hershey

Its published by Monarch books in 2000 so its not a recent publication. Originally published in america by augsberg fortress.

The author visited England and came across the delights of cottage gardening.

For an american, a flower is just a useless pretty thing, but for an english gardener, it not just looks, its smell, the delight it gives to the senses, food for bees, and all the spiritual aspects of these flowers.

I suppose its different cultural mindsets. The author grew up in midwest america and seemed like a typical type a personality.

I have always been fascinated by growing (green) things ...

Being an inner-city kid, I planted the requisite tomatoes, beans, marigolds, zinnias, and cosmos in backyard gardens for all of my growing years.

When I purchased my own home, I planted hundreds of trees and shrubs, including dogwoods, birches, forsythia, spirea, roses, hydrangea, lilacs, and more.

Of course, the drawback for one who loved to grow things was (and is) the winter, when nothing grows outside except icicles. I lived in the Midwest, where outside growth stops in October, ... and doesn't get going again until March. So, five months out of the year I was going through withdrawal, with no particular outlet for this passion of mine.

Of course, at some point, I begin to delve into various indoor plants, and have had varying amounts of success with them. I grown Poinsettias, Amaryllis, various Philodendrens, and, of course, African Violets.

Now I can grow year-round.

Well for those who get bitten by jack frost you can invest in a greenhouse or conservatory.

In auckland we dont have snow in winter so things grow all year round including the weeds!

We do have a wintergarden in our domain that the gardeners grow hothouse flowers and tropical plants.

Its sad that the elderly cant garden anymore cos they cant bend down Im finding that a lot talking with ppl so thats why us younger ones need to step in and lend a hand. :)

But you can still enjoy being in the garden which is why we have those garden benches...

Yes, very true. :) I still have flowers in pots during summer etc. and I still take an interest in the subject. I also get a chance to go to a farmers market and it's nice to see what others are doing and to talk to them about gardening. :)

I have one I made online a blog its called rambling garden diary lol.

I agree its really helpful to look back over the seasons and see what you planted and what did well and what didn't and what you learned from it.

Not sure about hybrids mine was more establishing trees and shrubs and flowers and then doing vege gardening at the community but if you seed saving you do need to keep a record of things. Haven't really got into the whole science of it although some people go down that road...

In the Bible they talk about grafting rather than hybridisation. You can graft trees and even veges like eggplant.

Neat... :) Yes, so much interesting and fun things I had a flower bed and managed to collect about 15 different types of asiatic and oriental lilies at one point. so nice to find things that grow well.

Um can anyone explain Isaiah 1:8 to me. Why a garden of CUCUMBERS?

I mean, theres rose gardens, theres vege gardens, theres cottage gardens and theres vinyeards but I havent heard of just cucumber gardens. Why this specific vegetable. Was it a favourite or something?

Hello Goodbook - I don't think the cucumbers as such have any particular significance. It's more the image of the empty forlorn shelter in the field. The hut is there for when there are people working in the field to tend (plant, weed, prune, fertilise) or harvest the crop. It seems to be the only mention of cucumbers in the Bible.
Grow well
