For me I believe God succeeded. Where I believe your arguments fail dear Steve and those of your friend is that the doctrine of "Universalism" is simple the opposite extreme of the catholic false teachings of eternal burning hell. They over reach on God's justice and judgements while Universalism is the opposite extreme of God is only love and mercy, everyone will be save making a mockery of the cross and the death of JESUS. Universalism has some commonality with the false teachings of an eternal burning hell in that both falsely teach that God tortures the wicked. EBH teaches that God tortures the wicked forever while Universalists teach that God tortures the wicked and forces them to repent and worship him before they get out of the lake of fire to be saved. Is this the God you believe to be a God of love? A God who tortures all to worship him and follow him? This is not my God.

Now what the scriptures teach is that God is a God of LOVE and MERCY but he is also a God of justice and judgement who will be no means clear the guilty...

God is a God of love and mercy but he is also a God of justice and judgement (plenty of scripture here just let me know) and this is the reason why he sent JESUS to die on the cross for our sins and is where we see God's great love for us both personally and collectively. If God was not a God of judgement and Justice JESUS would not have had to come to pay man's penalty for sin so that we can receive Gods' Gift of eternal life and reconciliation. I see God's love in all of this, even in his justice don't you? If there was no justice and judgement for sin JESUS would not have had to die for us.

Yet you do not seem to see God's love and mercy in God's justice and judgement? This is where the greatest revelation of love for all time is seen and universalists cannot see this because they deny God's justice and judgement for sin. The wages of sin is death to all those who reject the gift of God's dear son and count the blood of the covenant an unholy thing. God is a God of love and mercy to all those who hear and follow him and a God of justice and judgement to those who do not. That is a good thought, to go by what the Scriptures say, not what men want it to say. Wen I went to the same Scriptures to find out the Truth about men's final destiny, I found it useful to pose damnation, annihilation and universal restoration as THEORIES. The cool thing about theories is that they can be confirmed or falsified by the evidence (Biblical texts).

This is what I found:

I was able to falsify damnation - this by finding that Hell is a 404 (not found), which could be a very long discussion, and also by discerning the Will and Character of God. I find it laughable to see "Hell" proposed when God fails to tell us that He created it, fails to threaten anyone with it and fails to mention it in the Law He gave to Moses.

I was not able to really falsify annihilation, but I did not find much support for it either. Again, it is excluded by the Will and Character of God. Really, how much credence should we give to the idea of a Creator God who then destroys forever?

I did confirm universal restoration. You may ask how, and it was not too difficult, for there are dozens of Scriptures to confirm it, and those in support of the other two theories can so easily be found to have been badly translated, or have been twisted. The Will and Character of God also confirmed it.

Be aware that I was not committed to any theory when I began, but being non-denominational helped, as I was not shut up in a box of doctrine or profession of faith. I see many in this and other threads who cannot seem to see outside the proverbial box.

You have no clue what the bible has to say about anything. I pretty much think that this one topic is all that you think about---nothing with the rest of the bible, like the prophecies of Daniel, and of course Rev, the 2 go together. You can't understand Daniel and ever consider that God has failed. Our God is sovereign, His word stands firm. His prophecies have always been fulfilled. You don't really get to the study of any other topic---do you??
