My point is an entire doctrine usually ends up falling back on a single word as its foundation.
Yeah, right! You're a regular Bible scholar. You probably don't know a hithpael from a hat pin or an aorist from an apple.

Hardly. But some better than many around here.
According to who aside from yourself?

How about sticking to the topic rather than talking about yourself and other members?

I have the abridged edition one vol. Didn't see that entry. Will check again.
It’s atypical. It’s under meaning b, prolonged time or eternity. The other main use is time of the world or the world to come.

But aionios has a separate entry, which is based roughly on aion but has its own nuances. One meaning there is also finite, though long, e.g Rom 16:25 (from the creation until now). But I’m not claiming that is the meaning of eternal punishment. I think it is the meaning eschatological expectation, in this case possibly translated punishment in the world to come.

TDNT put Mat 25:41 under the definition object of eschatological expectation, but suggests that it might take on divine eternity. I don’t think that’s obvious.

It seems to me doctrine that comes down to a debate over a single word, used in a figurative story no less, doesn't have much to stand on.

I agree. But a lot more images suggest destruction. UR has to contend with that possibility also. Personally I think to get to UR, you have to be willing to disagree with Matthew. I don’t have a problem with that, but many would.

Disagree with Matthew where though? Just 25:46? All the other places in Matthew I can think of that have Gehenna Hades and outer darkness where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, don't indicate those being a permanent state.
