The establishment media supported Emmanuel Macron against Marine Le Pen in the French presidential election because they were sure Macron was going to be the one who would oppose President Trump.

But it turns out that Macron and Trump are fast becoming close allies.

They remind me of Batman and Robin.

The French understand the value of American power to get things done in this world. While French intellectuals smirk at Trump, Macron is more practical. Macron originally cut French Defence spending while sounding more hawkish. At the same time he sought to deepen Inter European Defence ties. Basically he saw such cooperation as a way of releasing cash for other projects in a struggling French economy. But now like the Germans he is raising it. Foreign adventures are a useful distraction from domestic failures and also there is a Realisation here that Europe has not been pulling its weight or honoring its obligations in recent years.
