Joab killed a traitorous criminal who clearly sought to assassinate the king. Joab did his job.

Yes you are right Joab did his job regards Absalom. King David would not have been in a position to criticise Joab for killing the man leading the rebellion. Nevertheless David loved his son Absalom and waited his time to get revenge against Joab. I believe that Joab had got old and weak over the years assuming that Joab was a similar age to David.
