  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why'd Ahithopel hang himself?

And why is this woman called a wench?

Brinny

I believe that the people working for Absalom were traitors to Israel.

Ahithopel hanged himself because his advice was ignored.

I too am mystified at the word wench.

If I was a woman I would not be very happy ar being called a wench.

Verse 7

David is upset about the death of his son and says these famous words.

O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee. O Absalom, my son, my son.
Verse 33

Mighty Joab the captain of the host is very angry with David. Joab thinks that Absalom is a traitor. At the start of the next chapter Joab gives David a piece of his mind. Joab says that King David has shamed the day by grieving for his son Absalom. Joab believes that Absalom is an enemy of the state of Israel. This victory over the king's son Absalom, is yet another great victory for the mighty warrior Jaob. In the story so far Joab has never been defeated in battle.

I don't blame Joab.

Whoa! Just how long WAS his hair?

Brinny.

We are not told how long Absalom's hair was. We are only told that Absalom found it heavy on him. We are told the hair weighed 200 shekels.
2 Samuel 14 verse 26

2 Samuel Chapter 19

Brinny.

Yes Joab was right to be cross with David for mouring Absalom.
Because Absalom was a traitor to the state of Israel.
David should have been mouning the 22,000 soldiers killed in the battle.

2 Samuel Chapter 19

King David sat at the gate mouning his dead son Absalom. The people of Israel though that King David was pathetic. Many people decided that they did not want Dave to come back as king.

The people of Israel wanted a new king to replace King David.

At the start of Chapter 20 Sheba is chosen to be the new king of Israel.
The tribe of Judah chose to stay with David, as did the mighty warrior Joab.

Joab was a loyal and mighty man of David's. Not sure what was going on with Mephibosheth (he was Jonathan's son who David took under his wing, wasn't he?)

David was forsaking his position as king when he made such a public display of mourning for Absalom. Joab was solidly righteous to approach David and bring him to his senses.

This possibly connects to the significance of the "Lion of Judah" which i have always wondered about....

Judah STAYED with David. Not only was that significant for David, but it was significant with God.

2 Samuel Chapter 22

This chapter is just David giving thanks to God for helping him rule Israel.

God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
Verse 33

He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

Brinny this whole chapter could have well come straight from the Psalms.

The whole of Chapter 22 is full of beautiful quotations.

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer.
Verse 2

I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from my enemies.
Verse 4

For thou art my lamp, O Lord: and the Lord will lighten my darkness.
Verse 29

For thou hast girded me with thy strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.
Verse 40

The Lord liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
Verse 47

Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, amoung the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
Verse 50
