  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Chapter 23 appears to be a Psalm, of sorts, and some of it i grasped, such as God's definition of a Godly and anointed ruler (David).

2 Samuel Chapter 24

Joab numbered the men of Israel.

Israel was 800,000 men.

Judah was 500,00 men.
Verse 9

Here it is. David's grievous sin. He numbered the people. He took his eyes off God and was looking at his own "strength" so to speak. He messed up BIG TIME, and went so far as to cause Joab and his men to sin.

1 Kings Chapter 2

Solomon said to Shimei build a house in Jerusalem and never leave it. David had asked Solomon to punish Shimei for swearing and throwing stones at him at a time when Absalom was hunting King David.

Three years later Shimei broke the kings instructions and went to hunt for some runaway servants, who had fled to Gath.

Shimei was killed by Benaiah captain of the host. Shimei was killed for leaving Jerusalem and also because he swore and threw stones at King David many years ago when King David was hiding from Absalom.

1 Kings:1

here, in verse 5 is where Adonijah pronounced his own death sentence and shows his wicked heart:

5 Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

What adonijah did was wicked and treasonous. Makes ya' wonder why Solomon spared him.

Verse 34

It boggles me mind that David would pronounce a death sentence on Joab, who had been soooo loyal to him all those years. What a horrendous and shameful way for him to die.

And NOW he wants Shimei to be put to death? Why NOW? Why didn't he put him to death at the time he was so treacherous and downright contemptible to David and his throne?

Brinny I do feel slightly sorry for Adonijah as I believe he was the oldest son of Solomon and he thought he was the heir. He caought hold of the horns of the altar and this seems to have been significant to Solomon.

Brinny,

David it seems was still festering about both Joab and Shimei.

Shimei has thrown stones and sworn at King David while he was on the run from Absalom.

Joab killed Absalom, Abner and Amasa.

These things still worried King David in his old age.

There was more reason to slay Adonijah, than Joab.

Brinny it is my impression that King David and Joab were of similar age.

Joab was a mighty warrior in his day. I cannot find that Joab ever lost a battle.

But by this time in the story Joab would have been an old man. Joab killed King David's son Absalom, and Joab also killed Abner and Amasa.

At the time of these killings Joab was too powerful to punish. But I believe that Joab had become weak with age. David waited until Joab was old and weak before going for revenge for the death of his son Absalom.

Absalom had started a revolt against King David and 22,000 men died in the battle between David and his son Absalom.

Joab thought Absalom was a traitor to the state of Israel, while King David still love his son Absalom, and held a grudge against Joab all those years.
