  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

David KNEW that she was Uriah's wife, didn't he?

Yes Brinny we believe that David knew that Bathsheba had a husband.

But we are also told that Bathsheba was a bit special in the looks department.

What King David did was wrong, but nevertheless Bathsheba's son Solomon became the next King of Israel.

We also understand that Solomon was blessed by God and became a very successful King of Israel.

Uriah was one of, if not the best and most valiant of David's mighty men who would've given his life for David. He was loyal and David could always count on him.

Didn't David ask who she was and they told him that she was Uriah's wife?

Brinny I have not read the next few chapters, but if my memory serves me correctly, this mistake by David causes him a great deal of trouble.

Brinny the first baby son of David and Bathsheba dies.

Their second son is called Solomon, and is a future king of Israel.

David was told whose wife Bathsheba was, and that she was Uriah's wife (one of his most gallant and loyal and mighty men who would easily have willingly laid down his life for David). And he sinned greatly when he summoned her to him anyway, and THEN sinned grievously even moreso by sending Uriah to die in battle. He "set him up". How odious is that?

Then Nathan, God's prophet comes and confronts David about his grievous sins.

Later, after David repents, and Bathsheba gives birth to Solomon. Their first child bore the curse of David's grievous sin.

What David did was just plain evil. He sinned grievously here.

Brinny you are 100% correct.

Verse 27 of Chapter 11 sums up the situation very well.

But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.

Brinny the name of Ahinoan is hardly mentioned in the Bible, except that she gave birth to David oldest son Amnon.

There is an interesting story about Amnon (2 Samuel 13 verse 15)

Amnon became sexually obsessed with a passionate love for his half sister Tamar. (Tamar was the sister of Absalom). Amnon tricked Tamar into visiting him. Whereupon Amnon raped Tamar.

After having sex with half sister Tamar his love turned to hate. Amnon hated Tamar with a hatred even stronger than the passion that he loved her before they had sex. Amnon totally hated Tamar and threw her out of his house.

The brother of Tamar was Absalom. Absalom was very angry that Amnon had raped Absalom's sister.

Two years later Tamar's brother Absalom got Amnon drunk. While Amnon was drunk Absalom murdered Amnon. The rape of Tamar had been avenged with the death of Amnon.

2 Samuel 13 verse 28

So it seems to me that no good came from David's marriage to Ahinoam.

2 Samuel Chapter 13

THE STORY OF AMNON AND TAMAR

Poor Tamar she sounds such lovely girl. Tamar did nothing wrong.

King David sent Tamar to look after her sick half brother brother Amnon.

She could not disobey King David. Her kindness led to her being raped by Amnon.

Then Amnon decided he did not like after all, and kicked her out the house.

Tamar's brother Absalom took revenge on Amnon and murdered him in verse 28.

this "friend", Jonadab, was quite evil, wasn't he?

David was not a good or just father. It was as if it didn't matter what happened to Tamar. First of all, he should've never sent Tamar to Amnon the way he did, and then when he heard that Tamar was raped by Amnon and THEN shamed even further when he threw her out of the house. David did nothing. What a sawwy excuse of a father he was. No wonder Absalom despised David, and when he had Amnon killed, it was most likely his way to bring justice to what happened to Tamar. The fact that David did nothing was despicable.

Everything you say is correct. It was left fo Absalom to get justice for his sister and so he killed his half brother Amnon.

But two wrongs dont make a right and I believe that this incident started Absalom on a downward spiral into criminal behaviour.

2 Samuel Chapter 14

After killing Amnon there was a need for Absalom to flee the country and hide.

After some time Joab engineered the return of Absalom. But Absalom was was not allowed to see King David.

Joab refused to help Absalom any further, so Absalom set fire to Joab's barley field, and this got Joab's attention.

Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire ?
2 Samuel 14 verse 31

Joab then organised a reconcilliation between King David and his son Absalom.

We are told that Absalom was handsom and even beautiful. He had long hair, and none could match his superb looks in all Israel.

From the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
Verse 25

I would like to see a picture of Absalom. Just to see what absolute perfection looks like ?

That would make a good art project. To paint a picture of a perfect looking man with no blemish in him.

What a picture that would make, with Absalon's long hair flowing behind him in the wind, as he rode past his chariot. What a challenge for an artist that would be.

It didn't come anywhere near the odiously horrendous behavior of David his father. Absalom was grieved over what was allowed to happen to his sister, and then the fact that she got no justice, and David might as well have said he "condoned" it. Absalom was sorely provoked. David, in his sins with Bathsheba and then in conspiring wickedly to kill her husband Uriah, wasn't. David had it in his heart to sin without cause. He was DEAD wrong on both counts and even sealed his sin with Bathsheba with a double portion of evil when he conspired in his heart to do evil to her husband, Uriah. Uriah's innocent blood was on his hands. His son Absalom's hatred of him was also on his hands. This is the fruit of David's evil, coming full circle.

I believe this (his cold blooded calculating to conspire to kill Uriah-this shedding of innocent blood) was why God did not allow him to build the Temple.

Yes Brinny King David had trouble with both of his sons Amnon and Absalom.

Know what? That was David's bad fruit comin' to fruition....

Why do you thinks Absalom hated his own father so much?

Brinny.

I think it is not unusual for the first in line to the throne to want to take over before his time is due.
