  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Look how wise and kind David is...he gives the Egyptian (who must've appeared weak and very sickly, and possibly dying) water, and food before asking him anything. And then he finds out the Egyptian does NOT want to be returned to the Amalekite. Looks like David got a loyal friend for life here:

Verses 11-13

"And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water; And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights. And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick."

Brinny this Egyptian led David to the Amalekite kidnappers. David smote the Amalekites with 400 only men. David must have been outnumbered because it says 400 young Amalekites escaped on camels. David rescued all the women and children and none were killed. It also said all the spoils were recovered.

Brinny it seems that David gathered great spoils from the Amalekites. At first there was a dispute about dividing up the spoils. Some of Davids men did not want to share with the sick men. But David overruled this and even sent some of the spoils to the elders of Judah. David sent a portion of the spoils to all the cities that had previously helped David and his men. What started out as a disaster, ended with David being very rich and giving away spoils to many cities.

THIS is just one example that shows the heart of David and gives a glimpse why God called him the "apple of His eye" and why God chose him to be king. He had a "heart" for his people and was compassionate and generous.

1 Samuel Chapter 31

The Philistines destroyed the Israelite army. All of Saul's sons were killed. Saul was hit by archers. Saul then commited suicide by falling on his own sword. Saul asked his armour bearer to kill him but the armour bearer refused. The armour bearer then also fell on his own sword and died. All this happened on the same day.

Awwww...what a situation for Saul's armor bearer....i prob'ly would not have slayed my king either....it seems it was common for kings to fall on their sword if they were facing defeat by their enemy...i remember reading that a few other times....

It's tragic about Jonathan.

Yeah, my husband brought home a big snappin' turtle over the summer that was hit by a car. His shell was smashed and his flesh was badly ripped out; he knew it wouldn't survive. It wrenched my heart seeing him kill it, but I think it was the right thing to do.

My Mother died on 19th October 2014

Every death is sad. Whether it be a human or a pet. My mother died on 19th October 2014. That was very sad. Even though she was 94. My father died in 1984 so I have be a carer for 30 years. It is hard to think that she has really gone.

But near the end she lay on her bed in the front room fighting for breath. She did not know me, and could not eat. Her chest was rattling and I had to raise her head to help her breath properly.

The doctor said there was no point in sending her to hospital. It was better that she died in the comfort of her own home, where she had always been so happy.

On 19th October I came into the room, and all was silent. She had gone.

Brinny this brings us to the end of 1 Samuel.

The Philistines find the body of Saul, and they cut off his head and put it on display in their house of idols.

The Philistines then hung the bodies of Saul and his sons on a wall as a humiliation.

By night the Israelites steal the bodies from the wall, and burn them.

The Israelites burry the remaining bones of Saul and his sons under a tree.

Brinny tomorrow we start 2 Samuel.

Tomorrow we will read how David is informed about the death of King Saul.

David is very upset at the news. And we read how David kills the messenger.

I think from this comes the old adage.

When you hear bad news, dont blame the messenger.

wow, they put Saul's head into their house of idols.....that was a HUGE shameful thing to do, wasn't it? Almost like not just to shame Saul, the fallen king, but the God of Israel......i wonder why they burned the bodies

Awwwww i'm soo sorry about your mom....

Thank you Brinny

Yes the old house is very quiet now. I kept talking to her for the first few days. Asking if she wanted a drink, and is she warm enough. But I dont feel the need to do that any more.

It is over two weeks now. My mind has adjusted to the fact that she has gone.

I'm sorry. Terribly sorry. You are a very noble son to sacrifice 30 years for your mother. Sorry for your loss, especially knowing your wounds are so fresh. I wish I hadn't mentioned the turtle. I apologize.

YESLORDIWILL

Thank you for mentioning the turtle. It gave me the excuse to tell you about the story of my mother. My Mother became a born again Christian at the age of 14.

My father died 30 years ago. Father was a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a very occasonal lay preacher when asked. He loved his little church and did open air preaching evey Sunday.

My mother had a great fear of going into hospital, and feared she would be badly treated by the nurses because she was old. It was her fondish wish that she should stay in her own home as long as it was at all possible.

Her wish was granted. And in the last 30 years she never spent a single night in a home or a hospital.

She did spent a few days in hospital, but only after she was dead. This is because I requested resusitation and her heart started beating again. But her heart stopped after an hour, when life support was withdrawn. The hospital doctor phoned me to say that she was brain dead and there was no hope of any improvement.

God (our God of ALL Comfort) minister to you and comfort and strengthen and sustain you during this time of loss

Brinny thank you for you kind words of support. But its now just over two weeks and I have accepted what has happened and the changes. Yesterday I spent some time throwing away Mums clothes. It all has to go all the underwear, nightdresses and stuff. But once you have accepted the person has gone, gone to heaven in the case of Christians, then these tasks can be done calmly. This is one of the advantages that a Christian has over the unbelievers. A trust in Jesus in a great help during a bereavement mourning period.

2 Samuel Chapter 1

Brinny it seems that Saul did not die when he fell on his sword. And Saul called out to a passing Amalekite to finish him off and put him out of his agonising distress.

The passing Amalekite promptly complied with Sauls wishes. The Amalekite then took Sauls crown and the bracelet on his arm and took it to David.

The Amalekite told David the story. David was angry that the Amalekite had killed the Lord's annointed. David considered killing the Lord's annointed a great crime and executed the Amalekite for killing Saul.

I think the moral of this story is that the bringer of bad news must not expect any thanks. Clearly this young Amalekite made a big mistake bringing the crown and bracelet to David. The young Amalekite could have just run of with this jewelery and been a rich man. And perhaps that would have been the wisest thing to do in the circumstances.

David loved his friend Jonathan, and there are lovely words in verse 26.

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan, very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

2 Samuel Chapter 2

God told David and his men to move to Hebron and live there. The men of Hebron anointed David King over the House of Judah.

But Abner the Captain of Saul's host took Ish-bosheth a son of Saul and made him King of Israel.

There followed a long war between Judah and Israel.
