  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

And she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head, and his strength went from him.

Judges 16 verse 20

Delilah tricked the secret of his strength out of Sampson. The Philistines immediately blinded Sampson and made him grind in their prison. But his hair grew again. At a great feast Samson pulled the building down with three thousand Philistines on the roof. This killed Samson and thousands of Philistines as well.

Re: Chapter 16:

Samson was a Nazarite, right, and yet here in verse one:

Verse 1: Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.

He blatantly sinned....

Then there's Delilah....when was he gonna get it that she was out to "get him"....seriously, didn't he have a clue? :swoon:

WHY did he tell her this? Had he done lost his MIND?...he didn't know by NOW that he could not trust this woman who had ALREADY set him up how many times?

verse 17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

What a treacherous woman Delilah was and what a foolish man Samson was. He unwittingly enabled his enemies to give Dagon their god credit for the capture of Samson and he disgraced his God.

verse 23 Then the lords of the Philistines gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, Our god hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand.

It is here that he must've repented:

verse 28 And Samson called unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.

The Death of Samson

I am looking at the Death of Samson which is recorded in Judges chapter 16, verses 23-31. You can listen to a beautiful dramatised narration of Samson's death, and read along as you listen, by clicking on the links at the bottom of the this post.

In verse 23 we're told: "Now the rulers of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate, saying, "Our god has delivered Samson, our enemy, into our hands."

Samson's wife Delilah was tempted by the silver offered her by the Philistines, to deceive Samson into telling her the secret of his strength. Samson was a Nazerite and he had taken a vow to never cut his hair. Because Delilah pestered him every day, he gave way to her temptation and told her if the seven braids on his head were shaved he would lose his strength. She subdued him and whilst he rested on her lap and shaved his head. The Philistines bound him and removed his eyes.

We read in verse 25, While the Philistines were in high spirits, they shouted, "Bring out Samson to entertain us." So they called Samson out of the prison, and he performed for them.

Samson put his hands against the two pillars of Dagon's temple. His hair had begun to grow back and he prayed in verse 28: "Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes."

Brinny and others, please look at verse 20: "But he [Samson] did not know that the Lord had left him."

This makes me think of the times I have heard godly preachers say, sin separates us from our God.

Brinny, your commentary has been written with such love and tenderness. I have tears in my eyes, because I read this chapter this morning, and then I have read it several times this evening. I listened to the narration on my audio bible several times. I didn't read the bible commenters; I thought I would just share from my heart what I thought.

I have to confess, the story of Jesus betrayal, torture and crucifixion was going through my mind. We know our Lord Jesus was the sinless Lamb of God. He gave Himself willingly.

Samson allowed himself to be subdued and then he prayed verse 30: "Let me die with the Philistines!" Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.

I am reminded of Jesus words: "People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all." Luke 17:27.

The Philistines were celebrating with their god Dagon in his temple, when the God of Israel, brought their temple down upon them. God destroyed the wicked.

I guessed you meant Noah Brinny :) I expect Jonah was mocked and scorned when he told his testimony of being swallowed up by a big fish. It is the same when Saint Paul shared his testimony, he was mocked and scorned. The wicked do not want to believe Jesus is alive and He comes alongside people like us. How blessed we are.

We all have to learn to control what we tell in confidence to people. Samson made a silly mistake.

Shiny your comments on this chapter are very interesting.

That is true about us all needing to be careful what we say in confidence to people....

We can always tell Abba Father everything thing in confidence., When I need a long heartfelt conversation with Abba, I find writing everything in a letter really helps so much. The letter tends to get very long indeed, but I know He is never too busy to listen to the voice of His beloved Child. Goodnight everybody.

Re: Chapter 17:

ok, Micah is not the prophet Micah, is he? Did he just sorta' "buy" himself a priest (the young man), thinking that he has a in-road to God because the man he just paid to be priest is a Levite?

And wait a minute, did Micah's mother and Micah believe in other gods? He had a "house of gods"?

Verse 5 And the man Micah had an house of gods, and made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

Judges 17

A young Levite goes to live with a man called Micah to act as his priest.

Judges 18

The Danites take the young Levite from Miach. The Danites also take Micah's graven images. The Danites conquer the people of Laish. The Danites built a city there. And wordship Micah's graven images.
