Castillo de Colomares (Colomares Castle)
Location: Benalmádena, Spain

A monument / castle built as a monument to the life and adventures of Christopher Columbus in Spain. I like the color of the overall building from the brickwork, as well as the extravagant detailing and ornament. The small and large details really stand out and give the castle both movement and dimension. The arches and columns are quite nice to.

Now if we can only find out where exactly Columbus is buried.

I still remember visiting the Statue of Liberty over a decade ago or so. I've been fascinated by what the structural system looks like inside, and how it was engineered overall - including the two staircases within that allow guests to visit the torch and crown.

The neoclassical statue is located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The sculpture itself was designed by French Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, and the metal supporting framework by French Architect and Engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel - who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It stands at just over 151 feet, and it's skin consists of copper less than a tenth of an inch thick. The structure was designed to allow the statue to sway slightly in the wind, and was originally the color of copper before it oxidized into the greenish color we now recognize and admire.

Lighting is a n important detail in architecture that can easily be overlooked. We take for granted how influential it can be towards the general mood of a space and those in it, as well as its importance in the utility of the space. The color, intensity, type and overall use of lights all affect how a person feels in a space, as does the use of natural lighting. Certain materials can even be used for bounce lighting, or to make a room appear brighter or darker.

Wow! This is amazing. Especially since yellow is my favorite color. There's so much pop in the details of the accents because of the color contrast.

This would be the perfect place to have tea. It sort of reminds me of a place in Japan in a department store I think I had some tea.

When I first saw pictures of the Moscow metro system I took an interest, because I wondered why some of the stations were so grand, and used high cost materials, such as marble, that would more commonly be found in a palace.

From what I can gather, the architecture and expense is political.
1. The Soviet Politburo wanted the proles to have some visible, tangible evidence of what their hard work was paying for.
2. The Soviet Politburo believed that all art was pointless unless it was political. The elaborate mosaics and other forms of art, such as sculptures, were intended to impress socialist ideals on the proles as they used the metro system.

From these images you can deduce that lighting was a major part of the design of each station. No drab, functional, or industrial style lighting for the Moscow proles!

No, I haven't visited. Not being able to speak Russian would make it tricky. In any case, you can see it online, or in a book. I've also heard that taking photos can sometimes still be difficult, even in the post-Soviet era. Some photographers talk of familiarising themselves with staff workings, and waiting for staff to go on a break before taking photos.

Of the pictures I've seen, my favourite Moscow metro station is not the grandest design, although I think it does have green marble, which I'm sure is quite costly. It has a rather cute botanical theme, with ornate lighting that appears to grow out of the platform, and flower bud orbs that emit light.

I forgot about the trickiness of taking photos in a communist country. I will have to ask my cousin what it was like for her since she went to Russia 2 years ago. Right now she is snorkeling in the Caribbean.
