You're supporting Assad and his allies even though they are worse than ISIS can dream of being. Assad/allies commit genocide and you support them. That's all there is to it.
For good reason, and Assad is nowhere near as bad as FSA/ISIS. The OP was about the fate of Syrian Christians; Assad protects Christians and other religious minorites, ISIS slaughters them. I revived this thread because the government's retaking of Palmyra confirmed what I said earlier about Russia being the country that would help Syria through this mess. The town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Assad protected the archaeological treasures there, whearas ISIS desecrated them. You've made much of the government killing more people than the rebels have. I see this a good sign. The day the rebels are killing more people than the government is the day Syria is
really screwed. See, I don't just compare what the government has done with what the rebels have
done, I also take into account what, as evidenced by their behavior, the rebels
would do if they
could. That's the point of my signature quote; be careful about being to quick to sympathize with people simply because they are oppressed - many of them would be terrible oppressors if it were within their power to do so.
I anticipated, before we even went into Iraq, that the overthrow of Saddam Heussein would be likely to create a political vacuum that would ultimately be filled by something worse. Not only did this occur, but the contagion spread to Syria. Now you would have the Western powers work to destabilize another secular Arab nationalist regime, which is now the only thing standing in the way of ISIS domination of the Levant? We've already seen from Iraq where that road leads. I'm aware of Assad's cruelty. That doesn't mean I'm naive about what will likely happen to Syria if he falls..
