• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was wondering if anyone besides myself who takes supplements for their mood disorder. I came across a lot of information on cod liver oil and the essential fatty acids that are good for those who have mood disorders. Not only cod liver oil, but how B12 vitamin can also help with depression.

When I went into the hospital in October one of the first tests they did on me was to check my B12 level and I was flat out. They gave me b12 immediately and it was apart of my regimen the whole time and they told me to get it checked every 12 weeks.

I do know and have read that people with bipolar are to stay away from flax seed oil that it can send us into a mania.

Just curious what others use and do you think it works for you? I have been pretty level (a couple of down days) for the last 8 weeks. I have been good at taking my supplements too.

I take Fish Oil and lecithin daily for mental health, I also use a multivitamin and calcium (due to my age) daily. Recently I have added oat bran for other reasons as well.

I used focus factor for awhile when they gave out free 30 day trials. I really felt better (was it a mild mania-who knows???) for the next two times I tried it, it didn't seem to do anything. . . so because it is so VERY EXPENSIVE-I do not take it.

I try to eat the healthiest foods I can afford and we grow our own fruit and garden, beyond that anything else I have tried and I have tried llots over the years, do no seem to make a difference for me.

Hi All. I just found this thread (and section) today. I take 5-HTP for my bipolar and it works wonders for me. It's over the counter and has no side effects. It regulates the serotonin in your brain and helps with your sleep and eating patterns as well. When I started out I took 50mg. I really don't notice a difference when I take 100 mg, but I do notice when I don't take it at all.

I researched long and hard for something that would work after watching my mother take all these prescription pills that didn't make a difference (or made her worse).

I hope my experience helps someone here. Feel free to ask any questions, and of course research it yourself. I use MRM brand (I have tried others, but I like that brand best).

God bless!

Bump up. We need to beef up this section i think it would really help.

B12 hugh? My friend was swearing by these suppliments she had. She thought it may help me she gave me the whole bottle. When i re read your post I thought. I think that is what my friend gave me. And so I ran and got the bottle and that's it. What does B-12 do? Maybe i'm flat out too?

b-12 is a naturally occurring vitamin that is necessary for neurological system development, etc. some people lack intrinsic factor which is necessary to absorb it in the oral form and must have shots. this is a good summary out of the UK
