  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Some day last Lent I texted the local priest (who speaks english :prayer:) to ask if that päästoliturgia ("lenten Liturgy" in literal translation I guess) service that I saw mentioned on the schedule of services was actually the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts. His answer was along the lines of:

Dear <my real name self-censored>. That is correct. Here we say päästoliturgia, because in finnish the phrase Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is very long: <huge sentence, longer than some paragraphs, even longer than some short essays, average word length 65 letters>.

:p

Probably would be Paasto since that means fast... PreSanctified Gifts is easily shortened in Finland as EPL (Ennen Pyhitettyjen Lahjojen Liturgia). :p^_^

Yes, of course you are right. I can't tell the difference between a and ä when people speak, let alone pronounce it, let alone remember the correct spelling. People say there's a difference, but I just can't hear it at all . But I've developed a liking for the double ää thing. Once in Hailuoto I found a street name with three ää combinations, something like Väärääläätie I'm sure it's wrong, but visually I'm close. I had the laugh of my lifetime :p.

Believe me I understand you more than you'd think. I'm one of those odd Swedish speaking Finns and I had it very difficult learning Finnish. I really didn't speak much until I dated a Finnish speaking guy after high school. I squeezed by high school... and I still don't write it very well but people understand enough and I just don't care as much anymore... Now with speaking mainly English I mix all the languages together at some point and that just sounds ridiculous. The words in the wrong order, a word of Swedish and in English all tossed in, in a lovely mishmash...

I'm just swinging by before I have to pack up the last stuff in my car and head to church (by the way of Barnes & Noble)... Fr Daniel (the former muslim, now Orthodox priest) will be at church today as well as two Sunday's in November.
Cheerio! I'm outta here!

MnM note, when I proposed to my wife I bought her a few bags of cusom printed MnMs. The MnMs had 2 notes on them. On one MnM it said "I love you" and on the other it said "Will you marry me". I then gave them to her the night I proposed to her after dinner. She was tickled pink by the idea.
