Hello everyone! Not orthodox yet but will become a catechumen in the OCA soon. I've been reading a bit about the OO church and why they split from the EO, and I'm glad they're both undergoing discussion to try to reunite. to all!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Having now found my way here, I can say hello as a new Oriental Orthodox poster.

I am a member of the British Orthodox Church (received this February) and found my way there from Anglicanism. I have been very impressed with some of the OO contributions here, and think Mina's comments in the 'Not Monophysite' thread are just brilliant.

It will take me time to work it all out here - I'm intrigued by the figures some of you have, but can't work out how to acquire them.

In Christ,

Anglian

Not to get off topic, but everything on this site is basically purchased with blessings. You get 1 blessing per post, you get 1000 blessings for every dollar you donate to the site.

Your blessings buys avatars, profile pics, the cartoon characters up there, signatures, etc.

Also, you have to have (if I remember correctly) 100 posts to be able to post a link to another website.

Although, the easiest way to get blessings is for someone to give them to you...

Like now.

^_^

Dear Copticorthodoxy,

Welcome in the Oriental Orthodox forum , could you please tell us about your conversion to the Oriental Orthodoxy

For many years I was an Anglican who believed in the notion of the 'branch theory'; the story of my growing realisation that this was not so is not an uncommon one, but, as I still have a great affection for the Anglican Church, I don't want want to dwell on the negatives; it brought me to the door of Orthodoxy after all.

Some of my friends became Roman Catholics, but for me that never was an option; although I admire many of the things it does, Papal supremacy and the notion of purgatory were two additions too many to the Faith once delivered, so for me it had to be the Orthodox Church.

The problem I encountered in the UK was that the Orthodox Churches with whom I came into contact seemed to confuse Orthodox praxis with ethnic practice; it seemed to be expected that one would develop some great interest in Greece of Russia and adapt oneself to those form of Orthodoxy. There were also issues about exclusivity and what, to me, seemed intolerance.

Prayer and reflection seemed to bring no answers - but as St. Isaac wrote, if God seems not to answer your prayer, do not worry, for you are not wiser than God.

As someone who reads a great deal, I had come across the Coptic Church, and had always admired Coptic art and spirituality, but clearly it was an Egyptian form of Orthodoxy and not for me; but reading further I came across mention of the British Orthodox Church.

I found its website almost like a revelation: Orthodoxy with a British ethos - just what I had thought was not possible. Getting in contact with them, I found everyone I dealt with eirenic, patient and just anxious to help my spiritual journey. There was no insistence on anything - except helping me when I asked questions. Peter Farrington, who is a member of this forum, was the most enormous assistance, and I owe him much.

My one worry was the old cry of 'Monophysite'; but it became plain that this was an old slander and had never had any truth in it. This coincided with a growing realisation that this was where I was being called.

Abba Seraphim, the Metropolitan (and one of the most patently holy men I have ever met) agreed to receive me as a catechumen, and I began a period of prayer, reflection and attendance at Church (even though it meant a 120 mile round journey on a Sunday).

The day came when Abba Seraphim asked me whether I felt ready to be received; ready, no, worthy no, but desirous, yes. Then, in February this year the great day came. My first communion is something about which I cannot write - but the sense of communion with Him - finally - was overwhelming.

I am not someone who has had what might be called 'a conversion experience' - but that day, I knew I was home.

To anyone in the UK who is on a spiritual journey, I would suggest contacting the BOC. Not once did anyone suggest I 'convert' - they just supported me, as they have dozens of others. Some come in for a while, as we have a British Orthodox Fellowship, where those interested can join without joining the Church itself, and then they move on. Others, like me, stayed.

I feel blessed to be part of it, and through it, the Coptic Church, and through that part of the family of the Oriental Orthodox.

In Christ,

Anglian

I wish there was an American equivalent of your church, you lucky dog.

Peace.

Perhaps we do need a British Orthodox missionary to the States. Who knows? Maybe we in the US will evolve into something (after all, those who do not look forward for the culture around them, and only serves the culture in them is destined to be extinct).

Dear Mina,
Your last thought is a very profound and significant one.

One of the greatest gifts we in the BOC have from our Mother Church in Alexandria is just the recognition of the point you make.

Thus, where in EO quarters there are discussions about British people adapting to Russian or Greek mores, with the BOC we can do away with such obstacles and get straight to the Faith itself.

In some ways, one can see something like Fr. Gillquist's mission providing the way forward for English-speaking Americans. Obviously he and his group were fortunate i meeting with the eirenicism of the Antiochenes after the EP had barred them. But I suspect that if he, or those in his position, had approached the Coptic Church, or the Syriac Church, they would have found the sort of welcome we found.

If it be His will.

In peace,

Anglian

Blessings to all,

Just introducing myself, My name is David and live in Australia, I was baptized Lazarus because I was baptized on Lazarus' Day, (it seemed very appropriate)

I was born in a Roman Catholic family but fell away. Eventually became a Pentecostal but found their teachings didn't align with either the Word of God or history and I simply didn't fit in.

I began discussing this with pastors and the like but I was always given excuses, which simply contradicted scripture and common sense and so I started researching what the original apostolic Church actually preached through the writings of the Church Fathers.

Ultimately, by the grace of God, I was inspired to the Coptic Othodox Church where I found the same faith as I found in the writings of the early Church.

Peace and Love to all

David
