Sheol: is it a place or a state of being?

What does it mean God is a God of the living, not the dead? Perhaps because the living have the breath of life, the dead do not.

Mark 12:27
27 So he is the God of the living, not the dead. You have made a serious error.”
Hello YaHuaH, sadly, I have little time right now, but I thought that I'd quickly comment on Mark 12:27. I'd like to add another verse for the sake of context, and also add the literal translation of part of v27 (see below in brackets) as I believe that it may be helpful in this case.

Mark 12
26 “Regarding the fact that the dead rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, AND THE GOD OF ISAAC, and the God of Jacob’?
27 He is not the God of the dead [of corpses], but of the living; you are greatly mistaken.”

Does that help?

Jesus told the Sadducees, who believed/taught that physical death was the end of our existence/that there was no "after-life" of any kind, that they were badly mistaken, that there was, indeed, life after death, and He used the example of God speaking to Moses at the burning bush to make His point to them. IOW, "I AM the God of Abraham.....", NOT "I was the God of Abraham....", speaks of the Lord's present/ongoing relationship with the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, even though they had died (physically) centuries before He talked to Moses about them at the burning bush.

Additionally, the Lord Jesus used this fact as evidence (to the Sadducees) that there would be a "bodily" resurrection of the dead at the end of the age.

God bless you!!

If your trying to find an answer as to where the saved and unsaved go before all are ressurected, there is nothing clear in scripture to tell us. And may I also add, this detail is left out for a very good reason.
Blessings.
Way to avoid the question  I'm not trying to "find out" anything. I'm interested to know what other Christians think of the quoted scripture. Obviously you've never thought about it. That's OK. But many people have.

Thanks, I understand that passage of scripture and I agree. What do you think of the other quoted scripture? It uses singular and plural. Could "the sea" be symbolic of the place our souls go?

But just because we die and cease to have a "spirit" does this mean we no longer have a soul? Refer to the etymology of the word "soul" I referenced at the start of the post, and look at what the scriptures say:

Revelation 20:13

13 The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave[a] gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds.

Hello again @YaHuaH, I think that in this case, "Death" and "Hades" (the grave) are synonymous. The sea, on the other hand is, well, the sea (where many of the dead/corpses of this world are .. in "Davey Jones' Locker", so to speak ;)).

That said, I believe that this passage helps make clear the fact that ~wherever~ the dead may be buried in this world (under the ground, under the sea, etc.), ~all~ will rise again, both saint and reprobate (the latter to Judgment and the former to everlasting life .. e.g. John 5:28-29).

Also, everyone will receive a new body, commensurate with the place where they will spend eternity.

God bless you!!

Daniel 12:2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to olam life, others to shame and olam contempt.

The original Hebrew word for "everlasting" is correctly translated as "age lasting". Which reveals there is an age of sin and an age free of sin, an age of death and an age of life.

עוֹלָ֔ם (‘ō·w·lām)

Noun - masculine singular

Strong's 5769:

Some will enter עוֹלָ֔ם (‘ō·w·lām) contempt and others to עוֹלָ֔ם (‘ō·w·lām) life. Some will have life for an age, and others will have death for an age. But eventually, all will have life for an age.

A good English equivalent is “eon” which means a length of time. And like ever length of time, there is a beginning and an end.

God has revealed that the age of sin will not last because everyone will believe with faith alone in Christ, and thus all people will be washed away of their sins. The Lord hates sin, which is why He desires to wash away all sin. The Lord loves everyone, which is why He desires to save everyone.

Rom. 11:36 "Of Him and through Him and to Him are ALL THINGS, to whom be glory forever. Amen"

2 Cor. 5:14 "Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for ALL, and therefore all died."

who sleep

מִיְּשֵׁנֵ֥י (mî·yə·šê·nê)

Preposition-m | Noun - masculine plural construct

Strong's 3463: Sleeping

in Sheol,

שְּׁא֣וֹל (šə·’ō·wl)

Noun - common singular

Strong's 7585: Underworld (place to which people descend at death)

And where do they sleep? In Sheol, which is the realm of the dead, where both the believers and the unbelievers rest, which is not hell. Those who believed in Jesus Christ before dying will awake and go to Heaven. Those who did not believe in Jesus Christ, Christ Jesus Himself will come to them and convince them to believe in Him, and won’t stop persuading them until they believe in Jesus Christ as their Saviour with faith alone.

PSALM 139:8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.

The Lord is in Sheol! Why? Because He’s saving everyone in Sheol!

if I make my bed

וְאַצִּ֖יעָה (wə·’aṣ·ṣî·‘āh)

Conjunctive waw | Verb - Hifil - Conjunctive imperfect Cohortative - first person common singular

Strong's 3331: To strew as a, surface

Why do people make a bed? To sleep on. That means, everyone will have a bed in Sheol, everyone will be sleeping in Sheol, and God is there watching over everyone sleeping in their Sheol beds.

1 Samuel 2:6 The Lord kills and he gives life, he sends down to Sheol, he can bring the dead up again.

The dead meaning all the dead brought up again.

Psalm 16:10 You will not leave my soul in Sheol.

The Lord will never leave anyone’s soul in Sheol, everyone will enter into New Jerusalem!

Psalm NEB 86:13 For thy true love stands high above me; thou hast rescued my soul from the depths of Sheol.

True love for someone means rescuing their soul from Sheol. Thus, everyone in Sheol will be rescored, because God, who is the true God of love, has true love for every person in existence!

Psalm NEB 116:3-8 The cords of death bend me, Sheol held me in its grip . so I invoked the Lord by name. "Deliver me, 0 Lord, I beseech thee..." Gracious is the Lord and righteous, our God is full of compassion ...I was brought low and he saved me ... He has rescued me from death.

The Lord delivers all those who ask and invoke His name, which means, all who believe in Christ. Thus, everyone in Sheol will want to be saved and will be saved by believing in Jesus.

I don't see you dealing with, what by the logic/meaning you render, those that are raised to "lasting life" must come to an end also, no? What did I miss?

Interesting take on it.

"Hebrew words used for space are also used for time. The Hebrew word qedem means "east" but is also the same word for the "past." The Hebrew word olam literally means "beyond the horizon." When looking off in the far distance it is difficult to make out any details and what is beyond that horizon cannot be seen. This concept is the olam. The word olam is also used for time for the distant past or the distant future as a time that is difficult to know or perceive. This word is frequently translated as "eternity" meaning a continual span of time that never ends. In the Hebrew mind it is simply what is at or beyond the horizon, a very distant time. A common phrase in the Hebrew is "l'olam va'ed" and is usually translated as "forever and ever," but in the Hebrew it means "to the distant horizon and again" meaning "a very distant time and even further." 2 different versions, the first with 2 words in hebrew, the second, the English translations. If Sheol refers to the grave, how do the dead tremble and how is sheol "naked"? Why does it describe "the place of destruction"?

Job 26:5-6 (RSV)

5 The shades below tremble,
the waters and their inhabitants.
6 Sheol is naked before God,
and Abaddon has no covering.

Job 26:5-6 (NLT)

5 “The dead tremble—
those who live beneath the waters.
6 The underworld[a] is naked in God’s presence.
The place of destruction is uncovered.

I quoted Jewish sources, e.g. the 1917 Jewish Publication Society [JPS] translation of the O.T., my post #27, above, but it seems some folks don't want that. They search around until they find something, written by someone, somewhere that fits their assumptions/presuppositions. I also included a link to the JPS online.

Hmmm... How can there be an age free of sin when the unrepentant sinners are cast into the Lake of Fine, during that age, where they suffer IN THEIR SIN, for eternity?

I suppose there could be a "LOCATION" free of Sin in that age, but the age itself will most certainly contain sin and sinners.

Unless of course you are a universalist or annihilationist?

There is no coming age where the unrepentant are EVER free from their Sin, or an age that the unrepentant get to share in Christ's victory over Sin.

What do you make of these scriptures? Look at the different versions.

Matthew 10:28
NLT
28 “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.[a]

Matthew 10:28
Young's Literal Translation
28 `And be not afraid of those killing the body, and are not able to kill the soul, but fear rather Him who is able both soul and body to destroy in gehenna.

Revelation 21:8
NLT
8 “But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars—their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Revelation 21:8
Revised Standard Version
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot shall be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”

Revelation 20:14
NLT
14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death.

Revelation 20:14
Revised Standard Version
14 Then Death and Hades (The meaning of HADES is the Greek god of the underworld)
were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire;

Revelation 20:14
Young's Literal Translation
14 and the death and the hades were cast to the lake of the fire -- this [is] the second death;

Do those passages make it sound like God is going to torture souls for eternity? How can he do that when we don't have an immortal soul?

You are correct, that is what I said. Some folks look for something, anything from somewhere/anywhere that supports their assumptions/presuppositions. Here is that vs. from the 1917 Jewish Publication Society translation of the OT. Which OBTW is available free online.
Job 26:5-6
(5) The shades tremble beneath the waters and the inhabitants thereof.
(6) The nether-world [sheol] is naked before Him, and Destruction hath no covering.
I still don't see how this shows that God was trying to prove a point to that which He created.

Rev 21:8 eight groups of sinners are thrown into the lake of fire which is still called the second death. But Rev 21:4 says "no more death" so those 8 groups do not die.
Also Rev 22:11 says outside the new Jerusalem.
Revelation 22:11
(11) He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
Ten more verses, no more death, no more salvation, only, "He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still:"
While "Hades" initially was the name of a Greek deity in the N.T. the term "hades" had become the name of the place of fiery punishment c.f. Luke 16:23-24.
God did not throw an imaginary Greek deity into the LOF!

You are correct, that is what I said. Some folks look for something, anything from somewhere/anywhere that supports their assumptions/presuppositions
Like you do, quoting a modern Jewish source?

I still don't see how this shows that God was trying to prove a point to that which He created.
Huh? What's that got to do with this thread or post #30?

Lots of Greek mythology got mixed in to the NT. Perhaps start looking outside of the modern Jewish encyclopaedia.

14 Then Death and Hades (The meaning of HADES is the Greek god of the underworld)
were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire;

Revelation 20:14
Young's Literal Translation
14 and the death and the hades were cast to the lake of the fire -- this [is] the second death;

Do those passages make it sound like God is going to torture souls for eternity? How can he do that when we don't have an immortal soul?

Well, those scriptures have to square with this one:

Revelation 20:10
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Even if we propose these three are the ONLY ones that suffer in the LoF for ever and ever, the result is the same.
An age where Sin and suffering exist forever.

That is certainly presuming a lot, isn't it ?
Yeah, I don't make the presumption that they are the only 3 that suffer for eternity, but many do.
And as I said it makes no difference if its just those three, or if its ALL the unrepentant. The result is the same:
The Post GWTJ age is an age where Sin and Suffering exist forever.
