or is this the fault of a culture that promotes promiscuity and irresponsiblity on the part of men to take care of their family?
Certainly you wish to erase the impact of the white slave owners who raped their female slaves and undermined the very structure of the black family. I suggest that you get an education.

While I would never deny that some slave owners raped some slaves - to say that those events undermine the structure of the black family today seems to be a little bit of a stretch.

the residual effects of a traumatic event lasts how long would you say?

When I was 18, I was involved in an accident, another young man was not paying attention, ran the red light and rammed into the side of the car I was driving. The force of the impact spun my car around, I hit a mailbox and knocked it over, then a street sign knocked it over, then came to rest on the curb inches from another car..... to this day when I drive through intersections I always look to the left (thats the side I was hit on) in anticipation of a car that might run the light and hit me..... I do this even though I have never been in another accident and this took place almost 30 yrs ago..... when I taught my son to drive, one of the things I told him to watch for was someone running the red light and hitting him......

So tell me what kinds of effects will slavery which lasted hundreds of years have on the collective psyche' of those enslaved?

I think you are minimizing its effects... but I could be wrong...

Of course I am not an expert in that area, but was just expressing an opinion.

What do you think the effects might be on me if I researched my family history and found out that members of my family had been slaves?

In reality how many blacks have researched their family history, and possibly found out that they are actually descendants of blacks who were actually free?

Is this even something that should be taken into consideration or should we just assume that we belong to a particular group?

I would appreciate any feedback.

And herein lies the difference Stormy--neither YOU or anyone living today WAS a slave--to compare that historic experience with an event that YOU were personally involve in IS MOOT.

You are attempting to be a slave by proxy and it's just not going to work. Sorry.

my grandfather's grandfather was a slave.... I suspect some blacks who wish to trace their roots might look into it.... and its interesting that you should bring that up because Dr Henry Gates has spearheaded an effort for blacks who are interested to do just that.... Gates is a historian and has an interest in tracing the roots of black folks as far back as possible.... most American blacks ultimately have southern roots because of slavery, however they are using DNA now to track down ancestors.....

As to the effect of slavery and how that impacts here and now.... it varies perhaps, however it is not as simple as saying, "because my ancestors were slaves I act like this..."

Medically though there are some interesting findings as to why black folk are more likely to get diabetes, high blood pressure which suggests some adaption by our bodies but I digress....

No, I don't think you digress at all. I have always found it interesting when there are certain diseases that are more prevalent in one race or another.

I'm definitely not saying it is a good thing, but when we know certain diseases are more prevalent among our races - definitely something we should not be ignorant about - IMO.

This statement sounds very much like the "eat for your type (blood) diet, which I find to be bogus. I also find that ppl who blame their genetics for their every problem to be equally bogus.

I like what Hagatha Thrash, MD said once..."Heredity may load your gun, but LIFESTYLE pulls the trigger".

here is an example....

Researchers at Weill Medical College of Cornell University may have at long last explained the higher incidence of hypertension in African-Americans as compared with Caucasian Americans. In a paper published in the March 21 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Drs. Phyllis August, Manikkam Suthanthiran, and colleagues show that an endogenous protein called Transforming Growth Factor-Beta 1 (TGF-ß1) is produced in excess by hypertensives as compared with normotensives, and that black patients make more of this protein than whites. The researchers believe that this explains why blacks have more hypertension and more hypertensive complications (such as stroke and kidney failure) than whites. The authors also believe that inherited variations in the genes that regulate production of this protein are the biological basis for increased production of this protein in blacks.

to me its always a good thing to know what you have inherited and how that may affect you somewhere down the line, physically or mentally.....

HHmmm--sure sounded like you were making some kind of medical reference to race. Wonder why you are claiming you didn't?

I did not claim that genetics were an excuse for anything.... you said:
This statement sounds very much like the "eat for your type (blood) diet, which I find to be bogus. I also find that ppl who blame their genetics for their every problem to be equally bogus.
that is not what I was referring to.... as I said, you have no clue and your contribution to this discussion remains moot... in fact the more you post, the clearer it is that you have no clue...
