the federal authorities he was referring were ICE
I think it was both since he talks about ICE at the beginning but then changes to federal authorities when talking about the big picture.

In the sentence before he clearly refered to a group doing something outside his jurisdiction.
The national guard and LAPD share the jurisdiction of riot control
ICE and the LAPD do NOT share the jurisdiction of enforcing immigration law.

Ok if you say so but what exactly are you trying to accomplish here?

I don't think anyone on this forum is being rational, including myself.
I the chief is appalled at violence being used against ICE and I think and hope he supports the national guard presence so ICE can continue it's duties but he is smart enough to be tactful about how the government should show force.

It has a video. *wink*
OK. Having watched the video they are not saying that they can not handle the protesters on their own. The overwhelmed was at the different types of violence. They even put out a statement on this.

LAPD says they can handle the protests

Best I can tell they do not need the guard there.

Based on the June 10th article by Usatoday that you posted it looks like they can handle the rioters, however, based on his own words from one day before the LAPD was overwhelmed. Sounds like someone scolded him to change his tune.

If the governor truly felt overwhelmed, then he would have summoned the National Guard as he has done before. It is NOT the president's purview to call them to the states. Calling the marines against California citizens violates Posse Comitatus Act.

It was the chief of police that stated that the LAPD was overwhelmed.
Once again, he did not state it in the context of being overwhelmed by the protesters. He stood the different types of violence where overwhelming.

This is what he said:

“We are overwhelmed as far as the number of people engaging in this type of activity and the types of things that they’re doing. They’ll take backpacks filled with cinder blocks and hammers, break the blocks, and pass the pieces around to throw at officers and cars, and even at other people. We’ve seen people with hammers breaking the bollards behind the federal building, using concrete fragments as projectiles. We’ve had unknown liquids—who knows what—thrown at officers. There’s no limit to what they’re doing to our officers.”

CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said on Monday that President Donald Trump’s approval rating on the issue of immigration has skyrocketed among the American electorate.

Trump’s current net approval rating is above water at +1 point, which surged by 20 points since June 2017, Enten said, citing his own aggregate data. Trump on Saturday deployed the National Guard to combat riots that erupted across Los Angeles stemming from ICE arrests of illegal immigrants.

Trump’s net approval rating] has gone up like a rocket,” Enten said. “Compare now versus eight years ago during Trump’s first term. Look at this, in his first term, Trump was way, way, way underwater at -21 points. But look at this, he’s up [by] over 20 points now in the aggregate, he is in positive territory at +1 point on his net approval rating. Some other polls even have it a little higher than that.”

“There is no issue on which Trump is doing so much better than he was in his first term more than the issue of immigration,” Enten continued.

A majority of Americans, 54% and 51%, approve of Trump’s mass deportations and of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents searching their communities to locate illegal immigrants, a CBS News pollreleased on Monday found. Enten added that a majority of Americans who are “directly connected” to the events going on in Los Angeles, California, approve of Trump’s actions to combat illegal immigration.

Even in the light of the crazy stuff going in California Trump’s approval rating with regards to immigration is higher. What say you?

Keep the discussions civil please.
Speaking of Harry Enten and CNN polls. This one today regarding Trump's tenure of immigration ratings since the protests.

“Let's take a look at the net approval rating for Donald Trump on immigration. You go back to June 1st. He was at plus four points. look at where he is now,” Enten said, “minus two points in the aggregate. That is a drop of six points and only about two weeks time.” -CNN
No different than any town USA, when law enforcement enact traffic ticket quotas, you're going to see overzealous law enforcement with no other regard than hitting that number. That is the current deportation policy. Hit the quota. Which is why you see them trying to access elementary schools looking opportunity. No bueno.

Almost except that Title 10 allows the president to call in the NG to guard federal agents and/or federal property.

White nationalist streamer Nick Fuentes said of Charlie Kirk and Matt Walsh: “Six years ago, they said it was racist to say that we should have a whites-only immigration policy. … Here we are in 2025, both of them say no more nonwhites, no more third-worlders, deport them all.”

NICK FUENTES (HOST): Honestly, it's incredible how much the LA riots are radicalizing the right wing. I've never seen the right wing so angry and so explicitly against mass migration, so close to expressing their disdain in racial terms. It's still implicit, but it's on the edge.
It's only what the left has always thought I guess.
