SE Texas sounds humid. Am I right? This was forest, but dry and drought tolerant. I wish I could grow a dw too.
are they natives or introduced down there. It would be worth having just for the spring bloom. Anybody have mocking birds right now?

It's getting really cold right now and snow flurries. Dogwoods are very common in Virginia and North Carolina. A neighbor tried to tell me we can't grow them here, but mine have been thriving. The abnormal warm spring caused them to bloom, but they'll freeze tonight.

Very humid! But the East Texas Pineywoods south of DFW to north of Houston are beautiful. Lots of rain.

Dogwoods are native to that part of the state. But I guess like any other plant, different varieties have been created to sell in nurseries, etc.

Here in north Texas we have mockingbirds year-round. There's one sitting on the fence or telephone pole most of the time, singing up a storm. They even sing in the dead of night.

Very humid! But the East Texas Pineywoods south of DFW to north of Houston are beautiful. Lots of rain.

Here in north Texas we have mockingbirds year-round. There's one sitting on the fence or telephone pole most of the time, singing up a storm. They even sing in the dead of night.

Yeah, mocking birds like that here too. It’s spring. Sometimes I feel mocked by them.ha.lol

No offense, Floridians, but I hate Miami. I can't take the heat among other things. I'm more of a small town girl.

Finding Love in Mountain View (2020); I just watched it again. It's one of my favorite movies. I don't know why --- there isn't much of a plot. But sometimes I like to see movies with kids in them.

My alternanthera (Brazillian Joyweed) arrived. I brought them indoors because we're supposed to have frost tonight.

We visited my husband's brother, wife and kids in upstate New York a few times. His oldest brother lived in Washington State.

Mountain View is in Calif. Maybe plant them on the south side if they like sun. Or shade on the north.

My husband grew up in western NY. Beautiful part of the country. We visited his parents there at least yearly until they passed away. When there we attended either the small Methodist church or the equally small Reformed Church (est. in the mid 1800s) or sometimes a small country church. I remember going to a good Sunday School class. NY Christians are the same as all Christians, with the same beliefs and foibles. Don't know about NY City though, have never been there unless you count Kennedy airport.

Cash Cab! Loved that show; the original anyway. Wasn't there a remake?

Hmm. That sounds like an interesting plant!

We got almost 2 inches of rain this morning. Unbelievable lightening. There was a flash that seemed right above us that knocked the power out briefly. It will be nice to get out and work in some soil that's not hard as rock. I need to check my tomato plants, from the window it looks like a couple are plastered to the ground. Might get more rain as the evening wears on but supposed to be gone tomorrow.

I'm planning to transplant some Beautyberry sprigs.

It's too cold for Beautyberry here. I've only see photos. I'm sorry about your tomato plants. Did you have any hail?

My Brazillian Joyweed is the alternanthera I mentioned earlier. It doesn't look like a weed. I wonder why they call it that. I like the shiny dark purple leaves. Maybe it's invasive in Brazil.

Mockingbird is the Florida State bird --- very common there. I used to feed the birds in my yard here. My favorites were the juncos when it snowed and the downy woodpeckers that liked the suet. I love chickadees and nuthatches that I saw in Maine. I love cedar waxwings, too. They won't be back --- my neighbor cut down their favorite tree. He has removed 5 or 6 trees from his yard.

Before my husband passed away, we bought it at Lowes. Walmart carries it, but I don't feed the birds anymore. I don't have transportation for shopping now except going to Walmart once a week. Life has changed.

No , but, how do you present it to the woodpeckers. In a feeder. Raw beef fat or cooked. What did you get from Walmart? One time I tied it on a string in a tree but no takers. They actually eat raw fat? Woodpeckers to eat grubs I think. I’ve just never seen it done. Sounds intriguing.

Bird seed is getting expensive at Walmart and heavy. My wife sometimes asks me to pick it up. We buy the black seed and…. They seem to like those best. Scrub jays, red finches…. All like little bandits - voracious eaters. All spoiled and fat.

Mockingbird is the state bird of Texas, too. I think five states have it as their bird.

Our cedar waxwings have come and gone for the winter I think. Last saw them about two weeks ago. They like to eat the berries from the red tip photinia bushes, but we're down to only two now. I like the sound the waxwings make. And when they sit in the trees they all seem to face the same direction.

Lots of good recipes online for homemade suet. I make it, spread it in a cookie sheet, and then after it stiffens cut it into squares to fit the baskets. Keep it in the freezer until I use it.
